10 ideal dog breeds that don't shed or smell

What do you do when you’re longing for a canine companion, but can’t deal with the allergies and cleaning if they start shedding? Well, you look for a breed that doesn’t do those things. And good thing there’s a lot!

More than a handful of breeds are known for miniscule shedding, and not having a strong smell. It’s those ones that many cleanly would-be dog owners seek. These are some of them!

1. The Poodle

We might as well start this list with the most obvious example. You can’t make a list about clean-home-friendly dogs and not mention the poodle! Poodles are non-shedding and can come in small varieties too.

2. Barbet

Like poodles, Barbets hardly shed if at all. The curly-haired breed found its origin as a water dog, and now has become an idea; companion for dog-lovers with allergies. While the minimal shedding is nice, it doesn’t come without a trade-off. This dog’s coat needs regular grooming, much like the poodle.

3. Yorkshire terrier

Yorkies are popular in apartments for a reason. They do not have an undercoat, so you won’t be seeing much shedding from them. They are pretty yappy and energetic though. So while allergies won’t be a problem, calming them down might be!

4. Boston terrier

While they aren’t completely free of shedding, they only shed very little. The funny and lovable-looking Boston terrier is another popular choice for people in small living spaces. Just brush their hair with a bristle brush weekly, and the breed will prove a rewarding companion in your small apartment!

5, Basenji

With its origins in central Africa, the basenji is one of the more unique breeds on this list – and not just because of where it came from. The African breed is known for little shedding, it doesn’t smell, and it also doesn’t bark. Sounds about perfect for someone who doesn’t want to clean much fur or hear a lot of barking, eh?

6. Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise looks quite a lot like a toy. It’d be hard to resist picking it up and squeezing it. The breed’s fluffy coat does not shed much at all, making it as hypoallergenic as one might need. It also looks adorable.

7. Bedlington Terrier

American Kennel Club puts it perfectly, “For an active family looking for a no-shedding, lively, and loyal companion, the search might end here”. The Bedlington terrier’s sheep-like exterior might deceive one into thinking it would shed a lot. Thankfully, the breed is quite the opposite. It’s protective of loved ones and easy to look after.

8. Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is a cross between the beloved Labrador retriever, and another entry on this list- the poodle! It’s as friendly as its parent breeds are, and sheds very little. Though that curly coat that sheds very little still needs regular maintenance. Like many breeds, they are prone to genetic conditions such as hip dysplasia – something to be aware of if you’re thinking of getting one.

9. Maltese

We’ve got another toy breed to add to the list, and it’s the adorable Maltese. It combines minimal shedding with minimal odor, and is the perfect size for a first-time dog owner. That makes the Maltese a very strong contender for a cleanly dog owner living in a small space.

10. Briard

The American Kennel Club describes the Briard as “Heart wrapped in fur”. Briards sport wavy coat that sheds little, but requires regular upkeep to prevent matting. The breed boasts minimal odor too, but is very energetic. If you desire a hypoallergenic, odorless companion and don’t mind some exercise, the Briard is worth considering!

Whatever hypoallergenic, apartment-friendly pooch you end up getting, make sure you give them the care and love they deserve. Giving them the best quality of life is the least you can do, since they’re kind of doing the same for you by not shedding!
