10 facts of life that only a dog owner can understand

While owning a dog is a beautiful thing, anyone who does knows it comes with its ups and downs. Yes, you get an endless amount of love and snuggles from your furry bestie, but they also like to keep you on your toes as much as they can. The truth is, there are a few facts of life that become commonplace when you adopt a furbaby which you never would have given a second thought to before.

No matter how much you explain it to people, there are some things that come with having furbabies that they will just never understand. Here are 10 facts of life that you will only be able to understand if you’re a dog owner.

1. Say goodbye to alone-time

They are called fur-babies for a reason. They need your constant attention, affections, and care. And, just like kids, they will never allow you to have any “alone time” ever again. If we’re being honest, though, it’s worth the sacrifice.

2. You may have to greet people at your gate

While there is no question that you are your dog’s whole world and they would never do anything to keep you out of the house, it’s just not true for others. Even if you’re close friends with someone, if your doggo doesn’t share the vibe or feel they are a threat to their space or yours in any way, you’ll have to greet your friends at the gate from then on.

3. Your windows are forever dirty, and you don’t care

Another little fact of life with dogs; they will slobber and rub their wet noses all over your windows. Some will call your windows dirty. Then there’s those of us who are dog owners. We call it window art and appreciate every detail!

4. They will burn you out while they’re winding up

Dogs, at times, seem to be made up of pure energy. Just as you’re ready to wind down from a game of ball or tug, they are just getting started. So, invest in dog toys that do most of the work for you. Bubbles are great at this. Or a laser pointer.

5. A vest = service dog in the public’s eye

Just know that if you put a vest or jacket on your dog of any kind, people will constantly assume your dog is a service animal. Don’t get us wrong, it has its perks. If you don’t want to be asked about a thousand times a day, though, consider foregoing the vest. If it’s cold, opt for a dog sweater instead.

6. They tell you when it’s grub time

If you’re thinking of adding a dog to the family, just know you will be on call for grub duty. They don’t wait to be told when it’s time to eat. They tell you when it’s time to chow down.

7. You don’t have room in your life for another bestie

Your dog is your best friend. Your only best friend. Period. It’s a simple fact that if you don’t have a furbaby and end up getting one, your human bestie will feel a bit ousted, and they will be.

8. Everything is a toy, even when it isn’t

Though the difference between a shoe, the wall, clothes, and dog toys seems glaringly obvious to you, your dog won’t be so discriminatory. Everything in life is a dog toy. You just might not realize it yet.

9. You hate leaving home without them

While it’s true that you might miss being alone sometimes, when the time finally comes for you to leave your pup behind a few days the story will change entirely. Dog owners can’t stand to be away from their four-legged pals, and they will spend every minute of the day wondering how they are and what they’re up to. What hurts the worst is when you find out they had a blast and didn’t miss you at all. Don’t worry, though, this rarely happens.

10. Depression becomes a thing of the past

Last but definitely not least, the best fact about owning a dog is how happy you will become. Even if you’re a happy-go-lucky sort before adopting, once you’ve got a dog in your life they will bring you indescribable amounts of joy. You might have bad days on occasion, but they will melt away into love and laughter as soon as you see your furbaby again.
