When you have a cat, you know that there are certain things you should keep away from it. Any type of human food is usually a no-no as well as anything you may be drinking. But, that’s not all.

There are also common plants that could pose a hazard to your cat without you even knowing it.

They could be plants that you have in your home or your yard. Let’s take a look at ten plants the ASPCA says you should always keep away from your cat. Remember, these are just a few. There are many more you’ll want to steer clear off.

1. Apple

While the saying goes, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, that may be the case for humans, but not for cats. While the white part of the apple inside may be okay to eat, the stem, leaves, and seeds contain cyanide, which can be lethal to your cat.

2. Azaleas

Azaleas may look beautiful in your garden, but if your cat gets a hold of one, it could be deadly. If your cat starts nibbling on one of these, they could have heart problems and even go into cardiac failure. They can also start vomiting.

3. Lilies

These are a big no-no if you have cats. Not only is the flower itself dangerous, but the water in the vase can also be toxic for cats and lead to kidney failure. Here’s something else to keep in mind with lilies. Even the pollen from these flowers can be harmful to cats. So, the best advice is that if you have a cat, don’t have lilies, at all.

4. Daffodils

Here’s another popular plant that can be dangerous for your cat. According to the ASPCA, the daffodil bulbs cause the most danger. If they start munching on too much of the bulb cats can get convulsions, tremors, and more health problems.

5. Daisies

While you may love daisies in the summer months, your cats won’t if they get their paws on them. If cats ingest daisies they can get diarrhea, vomit, and get dermatitis.

6. Geranium Plants

These are pretty plants to look at, but if your cats get curious they can start to vomit and even become depressed. It’s hard to believe that such a beautiful plant could cause kitties to be sad, but it’s true. Geranium plants are also known to cause dermatitis in cats.

7. Tulips

Many people like to plant tulips or tulip bulbs in the spring and summer. If you have a tulip plant inside or if your cat gets out and starts exploring, that pretty little tulip can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and depression if they have access to the bulbs.

8. Rhubarb

Rhubarb is popular when making desserts, but not so much with your cat. If your cat gets a lick they can experience tremors and kidney failure.

9. Philodendron

This plant is also popular in the garden. When cats swallow this they can get pains in their mouths, excessive drooling, and vomiting, and have difficulty swallowing.

10. Mistletoe

Last, but certainly not least, is the popular mistletoe plant. This is a Christmas holiday favorite. While people may like to kiss under it, it’s also dangerous for cats to be around it. Mistletoe can be dangerous to cats and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, and a low heart rate.

Know that you’re aware of the plants to keep away from your cat, take stock of what you have in the house and the garden. Take out anything that poses a danger so that your cat isn’t at risk.
