Tea bags are so much more useful than making a soothing hot drink – here are 10 incredible uses
Tea has become a trendy drink recently, and we for one are glad to hear it. Who said tea could only be enjoyed by pensioners? It’s warm, it’s comforting, it’s like a hug in a beverage. What’s not to love?
As if tea wasn’t already versatile enough (hello, you can get, like, 109938392 variations of it), you can even use your tea bags for non drinking purposes. Here are 10 of our favorite clever tea bag hacks that we bet you didn’t know about until today…
1. Dissolving grease
One of the most annoying things is trying to scrub the grease off an oven dish or frying pan. Save yourself the hassle and fill the dish with hot water, then add a tea bag and leave it overnight. The tannins in the tea will get to work, loosening up the grease and making it easy to wash away the next morning.
2. Polishing wooden surfaces
Trying to get your head around the idea that tea – the thing that stains – can actually polish and clean surfaces is a bit tricky. But try dipping a rag into a cup of tea and using it to polish your wooden tables and counter tops. We promise you’ll be blown away by the result.
3. Fire starting
You can genuinely use tea bags as fire starters if you don’t have the proper equipment lying around. Just dip a dry teabag in melted wax and wait for them to cool.
4. Washing your hair
One of the simplest home remedies for shiny, smooth hair is the tea wash. Use your old tea bags to brew a strong cup of tea, let the water cool, and remove the teabags. Then carefully pour the rinse over your hair and let it sit for 10 minutes. Follow up with your normal shampoo and conditioner.
5. Soothing sunburn
We’ve all got caught in the sun in the past – even applying sun screen doesn’t always seem to work like it should. If you don’t have any after-sun to hand, tea bags will do the trick. Just brew your old tea bags until the water turns black, then wait for the solution to cool. Dip a rag into the tea and dab it onto your skin. Don’t wipe it off – let it soak in gradually.
6. Reduce under-eye circles
Fed up with arriving at work with under-eye evidence that you spent last night binge-watching Netflix documentaries? Tea bags have got your back. Cool your old tea bags in the refrigerator, then take them out and pop one over each closed eye. Lie back and let the caffeine get to work shrinking your blood vessels.
7. Treating skin irritations
The soothing qualities of tea make it a great ingredient for naturally treating skin irritations. For the likes of bug bites and allergy rashes, place a cool, damp tea bag onto the affected area and give it time to reduce the itching and soothe inflammation.
8. Cleaning your carpets
For this tea hack, you’ll also need to get your hands on another versatile home cleaning product: baking soda. Let your tea bags dry out, then open the bags and mix the tea leaves with a sprinkle of baking soda. Add the concoction to your old carpets, leaving for 20 minutes before vacuuming off. The tea will trap dirt, while the baking soda will remove any unpleasant odors.
9. Treating your skin
If you’re missing your trips to the spa, despair no more! You can make your very own tea steam facial from home. Just add a few tea bags to a bowl of boiling water and lean over to let the steam rise up onto your face. Stay in this position for 5 to 10 minutes for the best results.
10. Absorbing odors
Tea bags can be used in pretty much any location that smells. Try putting try used tea bags into your smelly shoes, drawers or wardrobes to absorb odors and leave your home smelling clean and fresh.
