100-year-old superfan invited to Kansas City Chiefs game and meets her favorite player
We love a die-hard sports fan – especially when it’s a centenarian who finally got a attend her first football game.
Melba Mills is 100 years old and has been a fan of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs since 1963 when they moved from Houston to Kansas City. In fact, she’s watched every game from the Bonner Springs, Kansas neighborhood where she’s lived her whole life (on the same block, in fact!).
“Isn’t that pathetic?” she said jokingly.
It turns out Melba Mills is quite a hoot!
Aside from sports (of all kinds!), Mills also loves collecting newspaper clippings – and according to her son Monte Mitchell, she has quite the collection, including everything from news of the day on her past birthdays to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
But she has a special file for the Chiefs and her favorite player, quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“Unbeknownst to many of us, she has followed his path from reading the local newspaper,” Mitchell said.
Mills is a Mahomes superfan.
“I’ve got a whole bunch of stuff on Mahomes. Everybody loves his play!” she said. “He’s so fast and so slick! I just thought he was so darn cute.”
Even after 56 years of fandom, Mills has never made it to Arrowhead Stadium where the Chiefs play. At least not until this year.
But when her son wrote a letter to the team and NFL explaining his 100-year-old mother’s obsession with the team, they responded with a wonderful gift – her own VIP experience.
First, they sent Chiefs announcer, Mitch Holthus, to her home with a custom jersey – emblazoned with the number 100, of course.
Mills was touched.
Then, on September 22, 2019, Melba Mills got to see her beloved Chiefs play their home opener against the Baltimore Ravens from the sidelines and was also honored as the Bud Light Fan of the Game.
The whole scene was as sweet as could be and included a thrilled Mills smiling throughout.
Not only did she get to meet Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, Chiefs President Mark Donovan, Chiefs Hall of Famer Bobby Bell, and many of her favorite players, she got to meet her beloved Patrick Mahomes.
All of them expressed gratitude for her support over the years.
“It took me 100 years to get here,” she joked as she sat on the sideline.
Mills’ trip to Arrowhead was recorded by the NFL for their 100th season celebration and the sweet video of her visit has been played at games with the message “Cheers to 100.”
There was one letdown for Mills though – Patrick Mahomes already has a girlfriend.
“He wasn’t faithful when I found out he had a girlfriend, part of me just died,” she said with a wry smile.
Oh well, just because you’re 100 doesn’t mean you get everything you wish for.
But she was pretty thrilled when he presented her with the game ball.
Mills’ trip to the “Chiefs Kingdom” was everything she’d hoped it would be.
To top it off, the Chiefs beat the Ravens 33-28 that day, perhaps thanks to their good luck charm.
