11-year-old boy saves student from choking and helps woman escape burning home all in the same day
A sixth-grader from Muskogee, Oklahoma named Davyon Johnson saved two people’s lives in one day. The 11-year-old was by the water fountain in school when he saw a seventh-grade boy choking with the cap of a water bottle.
“I’m choking. I’m choking,” whispered the choking boy.
A crowd had gathered but Davyon made his way to the boy and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Three thrusts later and the cap flew out of the boy’s mouth. Emergency medical workers arrived but the boy was perfectly okay thanks to Davyon.
Davyon’s uncle, Wendell Johnson, is an emergency medical technician. The sixth-grader learned the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube all while being inspired by the man.
LaToya Johnson, Davyon’s mother, picked him up later that day. The boy was still shaken by the incident as they went to church but it was there that he would save person number two.
Ms. Johnson saw smoke coming out from a house at around 5 p.m. and Davyon insisted they check.
She turned the car around and saw a small fire by the back of the house. Ms. Johnson honked her horn while calling 911, as Davyon began knocking on the front door.
Five people ran out but an elderly woman using a walker couldn’t move as fast as the others.
“She wasn’t moving fast enough,” Davyon recalled. “So I’ve got to kind of help her get to her truck because everybody was leaving.”
Davyon assisted the elderly woman, before setting off for church with his mom. Ms. Johnson is proud of Davyon, saying that it’s really in his nature to help others.
“He’s always been there to help, whenever he can,” she said. “He’s just still the same kid. It’s not like it’s made him any more or any less.”
On December 15, the Muskogee Police Department and Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office honored Davyon for his bravery, rewarding him with a certificate which named him an honorary member of their forces.
Muskogee Mayor Marlon J. Coleman declared December 9 as “Davyon Johnson Day”.
Davyon’s school principal, Latricia Dawkins, described him as “always willing to help, always just a friend to everyone.”
Davyon doesn’t understand why he’s getting all the attention, saying he just did what was right.
“He said to me: ‘I don’t want everyone to pay attention to me. I kind of did what I was supposed to do,” Ms. Dawkins said. “I don’t think he actually internalized how important the feat was that he did.”
Davyon was eight when his father, Willie James Logan, saved others inside a burning apartment complex in Muskogee. Logan did the right thing even though it wasn’t his job.
Sadly, Logan passed away at the age of 52 because of COVID-19. But his example made an impression on his son.
Davyon doesn’t really brag about saving two people, only answering questions when asked. But one morning, he made his way to the cemetery to tell his father all about his heroic acts.
And surely Logan is out there smiling, truly proud of his son.
