Coronavirus is not a laughing matter. It’s affected millions of people across the world, and the sooner we can end it, the better.

Following the advice of the CDC is the best way to stay safe and healthy right now. It’s recommended that everyone wears a face mask – though with shortages in stock almost everywhere you look, this is easier said than done…

Which is why some ingenious people have taken to making their own face masks – after all, something is better than nothing. In a time of uncertainty and difficulty, these 12 designs certainly help to spread the cheer.

1. The pouty grin

This mask reminds us of those aprons that give the impression that you’re only wearing a swimsuit. And the fact that the “mouth” opens into a big grin when yours does… just fantastic. We approve.

2. The mask for the deaf

A big thank you to this ingenious student, who remembered the deaf when she designed her own batch of face masks. It’s much better to see someone’s mouth when they’re smiling like that, too.

3. The slightly terrifying creature mask

Because who doesn’t want to walk around with an unknown creature hugging the lower half of their face? We’ll pass personally, but it’s certainly an inventive design by this man.

This woman’s husband designed and printed her very own fancy filtration mask. The detail on this is incredible. We think we love her husband a bit, too.

5. The contagious smile mask

There’s no way you could keep a straight face if you saw somebody wearing this mask. Whoever created it is something of a comedy genius.

6. The biker’s dream mask

When you’re a biker and you’re out on the road, everything has to be leather. It’s like a biker’s right of passage. One woman isn’t letting the community down with her leather studded face mask.

7. The extra extra mask

Here’s a mask that puts everyone else’s masks to shame. It looks to be an old gas mask, but blinged-up to the max. Everything about this look is badass. It says, “Coronavirus, don’t mess.” We like the message.

Could this mask be for an Indian wedding? We’re not too sure, but it’s beautiful either way. We’d imagine it could prove difficult to navigate life with an entire chandelier suspended on your head, though.

9. The Spiderman mask

There’s nothing more fun than using essential cover-up as an excuse to parade around as your favorite movie character. 10 points to this man for his commitment to the cause.

10. The second-face mask

If you want to wear a face mask without looking like you’re wearing a face mask, enter: the no-face mask. This design is so realistic that you can even use it to unlock your iPhone with face recognition.

11. The mask of convenience

Taking your mask off every time you want a drink? Too much effort. Let’s all take a leaf out of South Korea’s book and add built-in sealable straw holes to our masks.

12. The wedding mask

What is this breathtaking sight?! How on earth somebody managed to make a mask look so darn beautiful, we’ll never know. We’d imagine getting married is near-impossible right now, but we applaud the creator of this mask for their effort.
