We’re all familiar with some common birds and how pretty they are, but it takes a real pro to know the rarer kinds. There are some birds that we may have never heard of, who are very special-looking.

1. Strawberry Finch

The cool thing about these guys is that, like their name suggests, they kind of look like a strawberry. They are a red/pink color with speckles of white. They are also known to do well in cages.

2. Painted Bunting

Part of the Cardinal family and found in North America, these birds have feathers in every color of the rainbow. Each feather is so unique and vivid, they look like a walking rainbow.

3. Bearded Reedling

This one is a species in the Panuridae family. It is also called the Bearded Tit. It kind of looks like a big egg, or a snowman wearing eyeliner. Into it!

4. Red Bishop

The Red Bishop belongs to the Widowbird and Bishop species and it is usually found in the grasslands and wetlands of Africa. It is black and bright orange and almost looks like it is wearing a matching hat and scarf — how interesting!

5. Great Prairie Chicken

Despite it’s name, this is a bird — not a chicken. It’s also known as a Boomer or Pinnated Grouse and unfortunately, it is growing to become a very rare bird.

6. Blue Paradise Flycatcher

This species comes from the Philippines — it typically lives in the lowlands but can be found in forests as well. Its numbers are declining which is very sad given how beautiful it is. Look at those electric blue feathers!

7. Green Bee Eater

This green bird is so beautiful because of its light green, lime-like color. It also has a beautiful, sleek black stripe across its face. And yes, as its name suggests — it likes to eat bees.

8. Yellow Oriole

This bird is so, so beautiful, with the contrast of its bright yellow feathers and black feathers. It almost looks like a bumblebee but in bird form!

9. Victoria Crowned Pigeon

Would you have thought this was a pigeon? We don’t blame you if you didn’t know! It really just looks like a Queen.

10. Yellow-Browed Warbler

This is a highly migratory bird that lives mostly in the tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia. And is that not the cutest face you have ever seen in your life?!

11. Purple-Rumped Sunbird

This bird almost looks like its wearing a costume, but that’s just its body! Doesn’t its head look like it’s made of purple and teal sequins? And the contrast of that against the white and yellow body is so dramatic!

12. Empress Brilliant

Is this not the most fitting name for this gorgeous bird? Yes, it is an empress and it is brilliant! It falls into the Hummingbird family and it lives in both tropical and subtropical regions of Ecuador and Columbia.
