12 reasons why you need an Australian shepherd in your life right now
When it comes to dog breeds, animal lovers will know the struggle of picking a favorite. All dogs are adorable in their own right, and each breed has its own quirky characteristics and traits that make it special in every which way.
But while picking a favorite might be too hard, most of us have at least a top-ten ranking of the dogs we find the cutest – and for us, Australian shepherds have made it onto the list.
It’s time you learned everything you need to know about these dogs, in case you happen to need any convincing of just how great they are.
1. They’re inquisitive
Nosy – sorry, inquisitive – dogs are the best. Australian shepherds are the sort to stick their snouts in where they’re not always wanted, which is always a cause for laughter. Their investigation skills continue to develop right through adulthood.
2. They have gorgeous blue eyes
Not all Australian Shepherds have blue eyes – some are a beautiful shade of amber. But when you come across an Aussie with sky-blue peepers, you will most definitely fall in love. Too darn cute.
3. Their cute little faces will boost your own fame
When you own an Australian Shepherd, you soon get used to stopping in the park to allow strangers to coo over your fluffer’s adorable face. It’s wise to always add 30 minutes onto your expected walking time, just in case. Both pups and adults display heart-melting levels of cuteness.
4. They enjoy the cold
Some dogs just aren’t cut out for the cold. The Australian shepherd, on the other hand, can’t get enough of it. This breed loves playing in the snow, and has a double coat for staying warm in the bitter cold. Year-round walkies galore.
5. The love to swim
While every dog can swim to some extent, that’s not to say they enjoy it. Luckily for beach-lovers, Australian shepherds are water babies through and through. They’re not afraid to go for a paddle in deep waters, and they’re strong swimmers, so there’s no need to worry for their safety.
6. They’re big idiots
Australian shepherds might be smart and sporty, but they’re goofy, too. If you’re looking for a doggo you can have a laugh with, you’ll get more than your fair share of fun with an Aussie. They can get up to all sorts of mischief if you don’t keep a good eye on them!
7. They come in miniature form
If you find it easier to look after smaller dogs, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a chubbier, miniature version of the Australian shepherd. Smaller pups weigh less, at around 21 to 30 pounds. Both sizes are adorable in our eyes.
8. They’re trusting
The trusting nature of an Australian shepherd means they’ll pretty much let you get away with anything for the sake of a cute photo. It’s not hard to convince your Aussie to dress up in fancy dress or sit through a pamper session. This is even the case when you make them look a bit silly.
9. They love their fellow Aussies
Australian Shepherds are a dog-friendly pet, so you’re free to let them mingle with other breeds. They particularly enjoy hanging out with other Aussies. Some Aussies can even befriend cats, providing they’re introduced properly.
10. Their big grins are infectious
It’s common to see an Aussie smile just like their owners. Maybe the breed picks up on human behaviour and realizes that a smile is a sign of happiness. Whatever the reason, it only makes these furry dudes even more lovable.
11. They’re great with kids
If you’re looking for a family dog, Australian shepherds are the perfect fit. They’re playful, caring and loyal, making them a great dog to add to a household with kids. They might grow quite large, but they’re incredibly gentle when they need to be.
12. They’re superb protectors
While they might have a soft, gentle nature, Australian shepherds are also very alert and aware of their surroundings. This breed is very protective of its family, and plays the “guard dog” role well.
