If you’ve ever spent any time at the beach, you know how fun it is to wiggle your toes in the sand. Even more exciting…building sandcastles. A lot of people remember using a plastic bucket to gather sand, which they then dumped one on top of another to create something amazing. But usually, the entire thing collapsed or the waves washed it away.

Even so, it was a lot of fun. But for some people, playing in the sand is far more serious. These individuals create incredible sand art, also called sand sculptures. Some of the creations are so good they appear real. It takes a lot of know-how and a steady hand to pull these off.

1. Honoring a music idol

Wow. In honor of the late, great David Bowie, an individual created this masterpiece. Every detail of this sculpture is perfect. I’m sure if he saw it, Bowie would feel incredibly proud.

2. Nights of Arabia

When listening to the story of “1001 Nights of Arabian Nights,” this is what you’d envision. This artist captured every element of the tale, using only sand. What a fantastic representation of Sheherazade.

3. The miracle of birth

There’s nothing more beautiful than a newborn baby. This sand art is simply stunning. Not only are the details of the child impeccable, but also the hands of the adult. Even the fingernails have realistic-looking ridges.

4. Dedicated to Game of Throne fans

The movie, Games of Thrones, garnered millions of fans around the world. If you’re one of them, you’ll immediately recognize Daenerys Targaryen and her dragon. This sand art is dedicated to you.

5. Fierce looking dragon

While dragons are a popular choice among sand sculptors, I’m not sure any have achieved this level of perfection. The feet, eyes, teeth, and scales are meticulous. I’m just glad that thing doesn’t breathe fire.

6. Vitruvian Man

Of all the images in the world, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man is probably the most recognized. Included in this sand sculpture is a quote that in Dutch, translates to “Creativity is no different than a liberated mind.”

7. Now that’s a sandcastle

I know when I was a kid, I only dreamed of making something this fantastic. This sculptor proved that sandcastles can be majestic. Too bad they fenced it off…I bet up close, this thing is even more compelling.

8. This is how you do it

If you’re going to ask the love of your life to marry you, take a cue from this sculptor. The question is — did she say yes? I’ll bet these two are now engaged.

9. Is it alive?

This elephant looks so real, you almost expect him to charge at any minute. The sculpture pays beautiful homage to India. It’s amazing what someone can do with sand.

10. It’s massive

This huge sand sculpture captures images from Africa. If you look carefully, you’ll see elephants, giraffes, and wild dogs at the base of a woman’s face as she lays sideways. Even African art adorns her face. Simply gorgeous.

11. The child inside you

That’s what this sculptor depicts in his work. Regardless of a person’s age, we all have a small child inside. The detailing of this sand art is so magnificent, his creation won the 2016 Siesta Key Crystal Classic competition.

12. How did they do that?

This sculpture is in a league of its own. While it’s simpler than some of the others, making sand look like running water can’t be an easy task. Even more special, it represents love flowing from a parent to a child.
