Far from being the result of a lazy shaver, the beards that adorn millions of men’s faces are grown and groomed the way they are by design. A man’s beard often means just as much to him as a woman’s head of hair does to her.

That being said, when someone convinces them it’s time to let it go, it can be extra difficult to pick up that razor and give her a shave. When they do finally make the cut and ditch their beards, many men are left with a mixed bag of feelings. While a lot of them turn up studly and confident, many others are left with the same feeling of remorse as women are after a bad haircut.

These 12 men who shaved their beards and completely transformed their looks, for better or worse, are the perfect example of how making the decision to shave can be a really, really big deal.

1. Maybe not the best idea

Notice the confident air of a bearded man on the left. Now, compare that to the deflated look of defeat in his expression on the right. Proof-positive that some men should definitely NOT shave their beards.

2. Holy youth Batman!

There’s no doubt about it…shaving can take years off your face. In the case of this guy, it looks like he shaved off a decade or more. Really, it all comes down to the look you’re going for. From the enormous grin on his face, it looks like it was the right choice for him.

3. Pleasantly surprised

This guy looks like he’s having some serious doubts about shaving off that studly beard of his. Good thing that he seems to be pleasantly surprised at what was hiding just beneath it. The guy had nothing to worry about, regardless.

When you grow out a beard that would make even Gandalf jealous, there’s no getting around the drama of cutting it off. Poor chap looks as though he’s feeling a little lost without it. We’re pretty sure he lost some major points with his LARP buddies on this move.

On the one hand, this guy’s beard was masking his uber gorgeous skin complexion. On the other hand, it was also masking a massive throat tattoo. If he’s got a job that’ll allow for it, we’d have to say the switch-up was a good one.

We’re not gonna sugarcoat it; some guys’ beards make them look like bums. Maybe they just aren’t very creative with a razor, but it doesn’t look good. This guy’s beard was getting to be a bit wirey, but a close shave brought his beautifully chiseled face to the limelight.

7. Lopping off locks of love

It’s true that many men…most men, have trouble coming to terms with the idea of being beardless. Then there are those who jump at the opportunity to do it out of love. This guy looked like he would be hairy for life until he lopped it off to donate his beautiful locks to people who could really use them.

Some poor men are left feeling unsure about shaving their beards even after the damage has already been done. Don’t worry, dude. You still look good, if not a little confused.

This guy looks a little gun-shy when it comes to getting a shave. Unfortunately, his after expression doesn’t look much more confident. We gotta say, changing the hairdo created a more dramatic transformation than getting rid of the beard. Either way, he definitely looks better for it!

Here’s a guy who knows his appeal goes beyond what’s on his face. His smile is pure and true both before and after getting his beard shaved off. That, my friends, is always sexy.

12. Elon Musk has a brother?

Sometimes a man can look like he’s related to one of the most successful people on the planet, but you wouldn’t know it with their face covered in fur. This guy definitely pulled off the transition well and he looks about a dozen years younger.

You see, guys? There’s no reason to hide those beautiful faces of yours after all! Don’t get us wrong, beards are sexy but so is the willingness to branch out with your looks from time to time. So, don’t fear the razor.
