Don't toss your coffee grounds – try these brilliant ways to reuse them in your home and garden

If you are anything like me, you have quite a bit of coffee throughout the day. Whether it’s one cup or one pot (I don’t judge), our routine usually includes us dumping out the old coffee and scraping out the used grounds. If that’s you, check out these 12 easy ways to reuse old coffee.

1. Carrots LOVE coffee

Carrots love the used grounds from coffee. Most root crops enjoy mixing in the grounds when you plant the seeds. Watch the change in your carrots!

2. Scrubbing tough pots and pans

Drop that old brillo-pad and give this a try. Coffee grounds work to scour the pots and pans that need a good cleaning. This works similarly to the way people scrub their dishes with sand!

3. Get garlic smells off your hands

Garlic can stick on your hands for hours after you touch it. Try using coffee grounds to scrub your hands next time you have do dice some up! It also works for a bunch of other smelly foods like onions and fish.

4. Cat repellent

Crush up some orange peel and coffee grounds tomorrow morning and sprinkle it in your garden or yard. This will stop cats from using it as a litterbox! The cats don’t prefer the pungent smell. I guess cats can’t “do their business” if the smells of their bathroom aren’t right.

5. The classic compost addition

Nitrogen is always a welcome addition to most compost piles. Adding your old coffee grounds will add that boost that many plants love. This is a great hack for all the home gardeners out there.

6. Deter slugs and snails

Coffee contains quite a bit of acid (which is what makes your stomach upset sometimes). These slimies aren’t fans of that acid and will do their best to stay away.

7. Worm magnet

Snails and slugs hate the acid in coffee but worms love the nitrogen. Add these to your garden to attract worms! The good kind of worms are always great at aerating soil.

9. Coffee scented candle

Ok, put the coffee grounds back together in bean shape. Just kidding, this one doesn’t use “coffee grounds”. Light a candle in a bowl of beans and let the heat from the candle warm up the coffee! This releases the oils in the beans, and therefore, the scent!

10. Dye your hair

Wrap your grounds in a cheesecloth or sock and tie it with a rubber band. Then put the bundle near some moving air, like a window or air vent, and experience the smell move across the room! For that extra kick, you can put it near a space heater. The heat aids in releasing more oils from the grounds.
