Many mothers worry about what their kids are getting up to outside of the home. This mother learned that she had no reason to worry.
It all began when Trinnel Scott was driving her son, Monte, home from school one afternoon.
She was trying to avoid all of the potholes in the road. Sadly, she didn’t spot one until it was too late and ended up driving right into it.
The impact from the pothole took out the mother’s tire and axel.
Trinnel was upset. Fixing the car would be costly. 12-year-old Monte saw how sad his mother was and got mad. He hated seeing his mother cry. Then he reasoned that many other moms all across town were suffering in the same way.
So he decided to do something about it.
Every evening from that day onwards, Monte would slip out of the home. Trinnel asked where Monte was going, and the child would always respond that he was playing with his friends. But a couple of days later, Trinnel learned the truth. A video popped up on Facebook showing Monte doing something very different than playing with other kids.
Monte was standing in the middle of the road with a shovel. Next to him was a trash can. And Monte was shoveling something from inside the trash can and into a pothole in the road.
Suddenly, Monte’s actions made sense to Trinnel. Her son had asked why there were so many potholes and if anyone was doing anything about them. But the mother assumed that the boy had abandoned his concern shortly after. Instead, he took it upon himself to fix the problem.
When Monte got home that evening, Trinnel announced that she had something to show him. The boy felt guilty for keeping his pothole filling activities from his mom. But he could see that he had nothing to be ashamed of.
“He’s just a kid that likes to help people. If it’s the fall, he’s raking leaves.” – Trinnel Scott.
Trinnel then asked Monte what he was filling the potholes with. Monte replied that it was dirt from the yard.
Trinnel had always been incredibly proud of her son. But this was a whole new level of pride. She knew that Scott was doing this due to his desire to help others, which she had been telling him was important for many years.
Word of Scott’s good deed started spreading throughout the community. Pretty soon, the city’s mayor, Kimberley Sims, wanted to personally show her gratitude toward Monte and his mother.
At a council meeting, the mayor handed Trinnel a bouquet of flowers and Monte a certificate of appreciation.
The mayor has since stated that she will be doing more to fix the potholes. Until then, Monte will be out on the streets, filling in the potholes whenever he has the chance.
Monte could teach a lot of elected officials a thing or two about community spirit. When he saw something affect his mother, his first thought was to stop that thing from affecting other people. Hopefully, the local government will be able to fill the potholes soon so that Monte can focus more on enjoying being a kid.
