130-Pound “gentle giant” goes viral taking very first steps into his forever home

When people see big dogs, they are at first a little cautious. While loveable, St. Bernards get a bad rap, mostly due to movies such as Cujo.

And so, for people with cynophobia, or a fear of dogs, the large breed can be a little bit much at first. One dog, though, is trying to change some of the misconceptions.

Cosmo is a big dog

At 130 pounds, Cosmo the St. Bernard is a big dog. He had been dropped off at a Nebraska shelter, Hearts United for Animals, by a breeder.

The reason behind him being given up was not known by the staff. While Cosmo is large, he is one of the gentlest dogs that you will ever meet.

Before too long, the online ad looking for someone to adopt the gentle giant was seen by an animal-loving couple.

An emotional video of the couple’s journey to adopt Cosmo has been seen over 13.6 million times on YouTube, and just goes to show that all dogs deserve love, especially the big ones.

What was most amazing of all was the length to which Cosmo’s new mom, Jayne, was willing to go to get him to his new home.

“When I decided that I was going to fly to Nebraska, rent a car and drive home with a 130-pound dog, I was pretty sure that most of the world would think I was crazy,” Jayne told The Dodo.

All it took was one look at the camera with eyes just begging to be taken home and Jayne and her husband, Geoff, were in love.

Jayne even arrived with a new toy for Cosmo in tow.

It was a toy crocodile that she had bought especially for him. Nervously, she approached Cosmo’s pen to meet him for the first time.

But any fear she had was gone as soon as she locked eyes with him. Cosmo came across as cuddly and affectionate in their first meeting.

It was as if he already that Jayne was the one who would take him to his first-ever home. But it wasn’t all sunshine and roses.

First, Cosmo had to be convinced to get in the car for the trip.

Understandably, he was fearful about getting in. But after much cajoling, and with the help of two others, Jayne was finally able to convince him to get in.

And once he was comfortable, the pair were off to New York.

Finally, Jayne and Cosmo made it home where he met his new family, Geoff, the couple’s two kids, two dogs, and a pair of giant rabbits.

And despite his limited experience around others, Cosmo got along great with everyone, though he did need some time adjusting to his new home.

“Cosmo has never lived in a home before as far as we know,” Jayne said. “We don’t think he’s ever climbed up stairs before, and he doesn’t seem to understand treats. (Also) He often wants to climb into spaces which aren’t St Bernard sized. He’s been here for less than 24 hours, and we just love seeing him have what he has now, knowing that he didn’t have any of it before.”

Eventually, though, Cosmo adjusted to his new life and is now as happy as can be.

“We want him to have fun and feel like life is an adventure, but also feel very safe and loved, as I don’t think he’s had any chance to feel these things in his life so far,” Jane said.
