Shiba Inu dogs are the best of both worlds when it comes to having a hunting/working dog and a pet. The smiley little furballs hail from Japan but have recently gained widespread popularity around the globe, and there is a perfectly sound reason for it. They are uniquely adorable and come packed full of unexpected charm.

Shiba Inu pups wear their personality on their sleeves and can tell you exactly what they’re thinking by the many and varied expressions on their faces. While they definitely have a certain amount of “Derp” in their goofy personalities, they can also be wise little dogs that know exactly what their hoomans need from them, the very moment they need it.

1. Ninja Shibas

If there is one thing you should never do, it’s to never underestimate a Shiba Inu. These wily pups have no problem throwing you, or even other Shibas, a quick kick to the face in order to get the one-up on a situation. In fact, it’s part of why we love them so much. They don’t take crap from anybody.

2. You can’t see me, hooman

Shibas think they’re pretty sneaky, and they generally are. While it might not look like it in this picture, remember that they’re hunting dogs by nature. The poor doggo is just out of its element here. If they were out in the rugged she’d be damn near invisible.

3. Looks pretty. How’s it taste?

Shiba Inus are curious creatures by nature. This little dude’s name is Yoshi and, though he admires the flower for its beauty, he can’t help but wonder what it tastes like. Apparently, it tasted awesome because mom said the look in the last picture is the exact same set of crazy-eyes he flashes her before he spins out with the zoomies.

4. They carry their own weight

While their silly shenanigans can keep you entertained for hours, there’s no question they know how to get down to business when the time comes. They work hard, they carry their own weight, and they are loyal to no end. There is truly no better hiking or hunting partner a person could ever ask for.

5. Super-Shiba

One of the very best things about Shiba Inu dogs is that they never set limits on themselves. If you tell them they can fly, they believe you 100%. They spread their paws and soar like the happiest birds on earth.

6. Sometimes they like to eat scorpions

This would be one of those “derp” moments we were talking about. This sweet Shiba got a little too curious about the wrong critter and bit into a scorpion. Her head is swollen to twice its normal size. She will be okay, thankfully, and hopefully a little smarter, too.

7. Lounging like a lady

This little lady was minding her manners while having herself a little soak in the evening sun. Those crossed paws are just too cute though! Sweet as she is, she clearly didn’t care too much for having her sun interrupted for a photo-op. If looks could kill…

8. The Shiba Express

You don’t know what fun is until you board the Shiba express! Can you spot the Shibas? That’s right. We used plural because, believe it or not, there is more than one true furbaby on this train. Hint: they’re the cutest ones.

9. The hangry struggle is REAL!

This is Yoroko, and he has two very distinct personalities that center around food. Before you judge him, you should know that he’s just like everyone else on the planet, including you. The hangry struggle is real and it doesn’t discriminate. At least there’s an easy cure for it, though.

10. The original memory foam

While petting their Shiba Inu, this doggy owner stumbled onto a conspiracy theory. What if memory foam mattresses aren’t made from foam at all? After seeing how long her handprint stayed in her Shiba’s fur, she could only conclude that memory foam is actually made with Shiba fur.

11. Brother? I have no brother!

Shiba dogs can be really deceptive when they want to be. They can also get really jealous over your affection. So, if you’ve got two Shiba Inu’s in your life, don’t be surprised to walk in on creepy scenes like this one.

12. You know you wanna swipe right

What’s the point in packing so much charm if you can’t use it to flirt a little? Shibas are notorious for their flirtatious glances and with good reason. They’re completely irresistible!

13. Dancin’ Bear

You can also rest assured that dogs who like to flirt also love to dance. If you’re looking for a good time, look no further than your Shiba pal. They will dance with you all day long and then cozy up with you on the couch for a snuggle afterward. People with routines like that don’t need depression pills.

14. Hugs for mama

Our kids can drive us crazy sometimes, but packed in with all their terrorist ways are daily doses of sweetness that always make us melt. It’s the same with Shiba pups. This mother just can’t resist her puppy’s hugs and we totally get it.

15. Sometimes, they act like children

Shibas have some of the most lighthearted personalities on the planet, and they aren’t afraid to tease people either. This adorable little brat named Ryuji likes to stick his tongue out at the passersby in his home country of Japan. We have a funny feeling they don’t hold it against him though.
