15 amazing ways to make your groceries stay fresher longer
We all feel bad when we throw out food that we’ve let rot in the fridge. It’s basically throwing your own money into the trash. But there are ways to avoid this awful waste.
If you follow the 15 tips below, you’ll find that your fruit, vegetables, dairy and other fresh produce last significantly longer. That means you’ll waste less food and save money on replacing it.
These tips will do wonders for your fresh food, your wallet and your sense of pride in not being wasteful:
1. Spread a little butter over your cut cheese
To stop cheese from drying up, just spread a thin layer of butter over where you’ve cut it.
2. Make herb ice cubes
Fresh herbs can turn to mush in seemingly no time at all. To ensure that they’re still good to use at any time, freeze them with olive oil in an ice cube tray.
3. Treat asparagus like flowers
If you get a bouquet of flowers, what do you do? Put them in a vase full of water. Aspargus will last longer if you do the same thing. Add them stem wise down to a jar of water. Then cover them with a plastic bag and put them in the fridge.
4. Spray olive oil onto guacamole
Don’t you hate it when guacamole goes all grey? It’ll be a healthy green color for longer if you get olive oil spray and give it a quick spray to the surface of the mashed up avocado.
5. Put green onions in a plastic bottle
Green onions stay fresher if they’re kept in a plastic bottle.
6. Separate onions and potatoes
This must be the easiest trick out there. Instead of doing something, you just have to remember to not do something. Onions and potatoes release moisture, so they spoil faster when they’re stored in the same place.
7. Cover banana stalks with foil or cling film
Bananas go bad from the stalk down. So if you cover the stalk with aluminum foil or cling film, the banana lasts longer!
8. Store apples with potatoes
Now that you know to keep onions away from potatoes, you’ve got some extra space. Store apples next to your potatoes. The apples stop the potatoes from sprouting.
9. Freeze your milk
Everyone knows that when you buy milk, there’s a good chance some of it will go down the drain. If you freeze it a few days before it expires, it’ll stay fresh.
10. Place sour cream and cottage cheese pots upside down
If you store them the “wrong” way around, then the pot will create a vacuum, preventing the appearance of mold.
11. Store carrots in a container of sand
It might sound like madness to bring sand into the kitchen, but this tip is amazing. Put sand into a breathable container and place the carrots into the sand.
12. Dry out kidney beans
You’ll probably only rarely want to use a whole jar of kidney beans. In that case, you should dry the leftover kidney beans out and place them in an airtight container.
13. Add a paper towel to salad leaves
When you’re covering up your salad leaves, you should always add in a paper towel. It’ll stop them from mushing so fast.
14. Freeze your ginger
To make ginger usable for longer, slice it nice and thin and put it in a plastic bag. Then put it in the freezer.
15. Mason jars are better than plastic containers
Ditch the Tupperware in favor of mason jars. Most food will last longer inside of one.
