15-year-old takes months to crochet herself an extra special quinceañera dress

A birthday is a special day, everyone knows that. But some birthdays are a little more significant. You know how big a deal it is when you turn 1, 18, or 21. We tend to celebrate someone turning 30 or 40 too, right?

But here’s another magic number for you: 15. The quinceañera is an age-old tradition in Mexican culture for a girl’s special 15th.

When Noemi Mendez saw her quinceañera was coming up, she wished to do something special in preparation.

Turning 15 was a big deal for me and other people. It was when our early teen years ended, and our adult life was getting closer and closer.

So Noemi has the right idea. You only get to celebrate your 15th once in a lifetime, so make it count!

The Mexican teenager has some remarkable crocheting skills, which played a major part in this.

You can’t have a quinceañera without a good dress. It’s the day that a Mexican girl becomes a woman, after all. She can’t just have any dress.

You can buy one, have one tailored, or you can do what Noemi did and make one yourself.

Noemi crocheted her own dress and the results are pretty outstanding.

The teen spent the previous 2 years perfecting her craft. Take a look at all the results she has to show for it. Noemi has crocheted numerous little miniatures of iconic animated characters.

But a dress is a much, much bigger project than, say, a miniature doll of Spongebob.

Obviously, making a dress takes a long time. For the teenage Noemi, that time was 4 months.

She had no idea how long it would take, so a head start was ideal. Wouldn’t want your quinceañera to come up while you’re still working on your dress, right?

Noemi says her mom does enough for them and is often busy, which is why she wanted to tackle this project on her own.

Crocheting the dress took about 4 hours a day. Noemi’s skill and dedication moved her mother to tears.

“I know sometimes she doesn’t see her talent. She’s like, yeah, you’re just telling me I’m talented, just because you’re my mom. But just seeing all the love and support people have given her, it just, as as a mom, it makes me cry.” – said Daisy Hernandez, Noemi’s mother

The dress Noemi created is a stunning medium-blue and pink. She adorned it with white flowers too.

Now that Noemi knows she can do dresses, the sky’s the limit. She’s hit a new milestone with her skill and that opens up a lot of doors.

A quinceañera isn’t the only occasion where Noemi would need a dress. She has high school prom too, and the talented 15-year-old is more than ready to crochet her prom dress too.

As for the quinceañera dress, Noemi plans to hold onto it. When she has a daughter of her own one day, she wants her to wear it too.
