1500 people come together to sing 'Hallelujah" and it's spine-tingling

Imagine a choir that consists of 1,500 people all singing “Hallelujah” together. Pretty magical, right? Everyone listening would probably have major goosebumps, it sounds like such a beautiful moment.

The music group Choir! Choir! Choir! actually made this idea a reality a few years back at the Luminato Festival in Toronto, Canada.

1,500 vocalists gathered together to sing the classic, originally by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen and the result is an extremely powerful, goosebump-inducing moment.

Canadian singer Rufus Wainwright himself was even there to make an appearance and help out.

“It was a magical evening … Daveed + Nobu (AKA DaBu) taught them back up parts to Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, then Rufus Wainwright joined them on stage to sing lead. It was an EPIC NIGHT to remember,” Choir! Choir! Choir! wrote in the description of their performance.

Luckily, the stunning performance was captured on video which people are still continuing to watch today. Even if you weren’t there and you’re just watching through your computer screen, you are still guaranteed to feel something. It is so powerful that its beauty translates so effortlessly.

Nothing like 1,500 beautiful voices singing in perfect harmony to give you some major chills.

Choir! Choir! Choir! is a program that was started in 2011 and is designed to get strangers together to sing a song together. The whole thing is headed up by Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman (DaBu).

It was initially started as a “weekly drop-in singing event.” But despite their modest beginnings, the group has blown up to be much more than that. Now they throw regular events in Toronto and go on international tours.

Additionally, they continue to rack up views on Youtube. This one performance alone has garnered over 11 million views.

“Equal parts singing, comedy, and community-building, the night unfolds like a dream: you get a lyric sheet at the door, DaBu teach you the vocal arrangement, and a video is recorded. Everyone has a ball and goes home feeling great,” the group explains via their site.

This event took place on June 11, 2016, which means it happened almost exactly four years ago today. Yet, despite that, it still feels so current and moving to this day as we watch from home.

A ton of people at the event had actually never been to a Choir! Choir! Choir! session before, which made it extra exciting. And so many people showed up feeling very enthusiastic and ready to sing.

Nothing could go wrong — there was plenty of guidance. They were set up for success!

With the help of their papers and being led by Wainwright himself, all 1,500 people began to sing together in perfect harmony. They were also accompanied by a musician on the acoustic guitar and they were being guided by a conductor.

Wainwright sounded great, as did the rest of the chorus. Everyone had such a big smile on their face as they hummed and sang for a solid six minutes.

Everyone had their own parts, too, which made it feel so interesting and dynamic.

Having this many people behind the performance really takes it to the next level. The industrial space they are in really boosts such a great sound, too. Lots of good reverb!

If there’s anything we can learn from this performance, it’s that singing feels good. We all love to do it, and when we do it together it’s just that much more enjoyable.
