18-year-old pitbull mix finally gets loving forever home after being overlooked in shelter

Dogs that are up for adoption only need a loving forever home. Sadly though, it can be hard for some to find one.

These dogs – surrendered or abandoned – have emotions, too.

They probably feel sad, alone, and in need of care. This is why shelters and rescue groups encourage people to adopt instead of buying from breeders.

However, it’s not always that easy, and the numbers prove how difficult it can be.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an average of 3.1 million dogs are up for adoption yearly, but only 2 million of them get adopted. Most of the shelters find it challenging to adopt big and older dogs.

But for a dog like Kane, who is both big and old? It’s extra challenging.

Kane is a large pit bull mix, a breed that many people hesitate to adopt because they are often misunderstood.

Apartments and condo complexes don’t usually allow big dogs. In Kane’s case, he is also 18 years old, which comes with a lot of medical complications.

Kane has arthritis; one eye is blind, while the other can’t see clearly.

These were the reasons why Kiss My Paws found it difficult to get him adopted. People often want to adopt a dog that’ll accompany them for a longer time. Adopting an old, sick dog defeated that purpose, so those looking around looked away from Kane.

More than that, Kane needed medical help.

At that time, he needed some dental care, medication, and other medical needs. The bills were mounting, and they badly needed somebody to take him in the soonest possible.

Kane was in a foster family waiting to be adopted.

He was under Carole Sandy’s care, who often took Kane for a walk in the park to interact with other big dogs. She spoke highly of Kane’s demeanor – all the reasons that would make him a good pet.

“He’s a wonderful companion. He’s very friendly. He’s very easy. He walks beautifully on a leash. He doesn’t ask for a lot. He’s really happy to just lay on the floor by your feet,” she told FOX5Vegas.

But despite this, it took quite a while for him to find his forever home.

It took a news broadcast and a lot of push through Kiss My Paws’s and Carole’s social media. People noticed this sweet senior dog and immediately contacted them with the help of Nevada Voters for Animals (NVA).

Phil and Ewa Halverson adopted Kane, and now he has the love and care he deserved.

He now has a forever home, family, and a gal sibling Mango who was also a senior dog. The couple fell in love with Kane immediately. They saw the report and Carole’s Facebook post and decided they wanted to take him in.

The couple also shared with FOX5 that there are advantages to adopting senior dogs.

Ewa said that senior dogs already know the old tricks, so there’s no need to train them further. Plus, they just want to chill, something the couple appreciated since they both were not getting any younger.

Phil also said they don’t have the heart to leave a senior dog in a shelter to die in a kennel. He believes it’s best to adopt them so they can be in a happy place before they pass away.
