2-year-old teaches cashier lesson on racism after cashier questions her doll choice

The great thing about little kids is that they haven’t had enough time in the world to become influenced by the pointless rules and stereotypes society forces on them. They are not born to be sexist, racist, or prejudiced to their peers – that, unfortunately, is learned behavior.

Meet little Sophia. This adorable toddler was paying a visit to her local Target in Clover, South Carolina, with her mom, Brandi. The 2-year-old had hit a potty training milestone, and it was time to celebrate with a treat!

Sophia was given one of the greatest instructions a child can receive: “Choose whatever toy takes your fancy.” This is the sort of question that can leave an indecisive kid hovering for hours in the toy section, completely spoilt for choice.

But Sophia had her preferences. She dreams of being a doctor when she grows up, and even has her own toy stethoscope that she uses on her mom, her other family members, and her collection of dolls. This little girl has ambition!

So it only made sense that when Sophia came across a doll wearing a nurse’s uniform, she just had to have her.

Sophia’s doll collection at home is impressively diverse. There are dolls in both genders, dolls that have stereotypical human qualities, and dolls that don’t.

In this case, Sophia’s new doll was black. Obviously, this meant nothing to the toddler, who had hopefully been luckily enough to never witness racism in her short life so far.

Nobody thought anything of her selection – not Sophia nor Brandi. So when the cashier asked Sophia whether she was going to a birthday party, the pair were confused.

The cashier then pointed at Sophia’s doll. She asked whether the little girl would be giving her away as a gift.

Things only got more bizarre when the cashier started to try and put Sophia off her purchase choice. Brandi recounts her asking:

“Are you sure this is the doll you want honey? Because she doesn’t look like you. We have lots of other dolls here that look more like you.”

The cashier was suggesting that the doll wasn’t suitable because it didn’t resemble Sophia’s appearance – essentially because it was black.

Brandi was understandably horrified. She went to speak firmly to the cashier, but her little daughter butted in. Sophia explained:

“She’s a doctor, like I’m a doctor. She’s a pretty girl, and I’m a pretty girl.”

That was really as simple as it needed to be. The cashier didn’t even have a response back to that. Little Sophia, a 2-year-old, had taught her a life lesson.

Brandi headed home with her daughter, but she still felt taken-aback by what had happened. She decided to share her experience to Facebook for the world to see, alongside an adorable picture of Sophia and her new doll.

Many people were so impressed with Sophia’s behavior, and shocked by the cashier’s, that Brandi’s post went viral. Brandi was overwhelmed by the response she received. In a follow-up post on Facebook, she wrote:

“I feel like the media is so addicted to negativity that we tend to harden ourselves and assume the worst in others. But you guys, all I have seen and felt from all of this is pure LOVE! (Aside from those who want to go off on the cashier, lol.)”

Sophia deserves endless appreciation for proving to the cashier that a person’s race is not important. We can only hope that this new generation of Sophias all share her open and accepting attitude.
