20 funny photos of cats who indulged in just a bit too much catnip
Cats can have a variety of reactions to catnip (just as humans can have wildly different responses to THC). Sometimes they’re hyper and they growl and attack – other times they’ll zone out and stare at nothing for an hour before dozing off.
Interestingly, responses to catnip are hereditary, as far as researchers know – and between 20-30% of cats don’t react at all. A cat has to be about 6 months old before it can feel the effects as well.
But it’s safe to say that all 20 of the cats below are feeling the vibe – and their reactions range from mellow to meltdown.
1. Time for a T-break
It looks like someone got into the good stuff and has no intention of going back.
Maybe it’s time for a break so it can still indulge in smaller doses later and not leave it all over the floor.

2. Blazin’
This photo appeared in a book called Cats on Catnip, which showed all of their various feline faces and reactions to getting buzzed.
We’re not sure if this cat has its tongue out from being “high” or is just trying to tell us what it thinks about the photo op.
3. The munchies
You’d better make sure there are snacks around if you’re going to get your cat blazed.
Otherwise, it’ll improvise.
4. Bowl hog
It looks like someone’s not sharing.
If your cat bogarts the goods, make sure you bring enough for everyone.
5. Whoa, man
Yep, he’s stoned.
This looks like something you’ve just got to ride out.
Try not to stimulate your cat if it’s already gotten to this phase.
6. Puttin’ on the blitz
No good can come of this.
Frankly, we’re surprised the cat isn’t sneezing its brains out.
Time for a clean up – and to put that catnip up higher next time.
7. Dude
Somebody got boudlered.
Next time, go easy on the dosage. Cats really don’t need to be this “intoxicated.”
8. Keyed up
Immediately after exposure, your cat is going to be on a wild ride.
Just put away anything dangerous and let them ride it out.
9. The couch-lock
This cat isn’t going anywhere.
It’s stoned AND mad that their owner would set a suitcase out to indicate they were going somewhere.
Bad timing, dude.
10. Greened out
That paranoia – it’s real.
Turn out the lights and walk away slowly.
11. Everything looks upside down
We wish cats could talk – we bet they’d say the best stuff when they were buzzed.
This cat isn’t doing anything too out of the ordinary – it’s just the upside-downness of it all that’s amusing.
12. What are you lookin’ at?
Do not harsh this moment for the cat.
Putting the flash on is bad enough.
Just let him enjoy himself.
13. The wicked weed
Sometimes when you’ve had a really great moment, you just want to be left alone to enjoy the buzz.
This cat looks pretty annoyed that its owner is trying to take photos while it’s clearly trying to have a heart-to-heart with the wall.
Back up, buddy!
14. Bad trip
It’s hard to know what to do if your cat is having a bad trip.
You’re probably going to be cleaning up some cat barf later, so prepare for that.
15. Contact high
Maybe this cat is just trying to get a whiff of someone else’s indulgence.
Or maybe it got some good stuff and now the whole world is a beautiful and fragrant place.

16. Oh hai, buddy
It’s up to cat owners to regulate their cat’s catnip intake.
But in this case, it looks like someone got it juuuust right.

17. Coming down
That looks like a classic “the fun is over and I can feel it ending” look to us.
But, hey, what goes up must come down.

18. MOAR
It’s hard to know when it’s time to give your cat more catnip.
But we’re pretty sure this little toker’s answer is “always.”

19. Cat in the grass
Ever smoked pot and then laid in the grass?
Then you know exactly the kind of bliss this furry creature is feeling right now.

20. No chill
Looks like it’s going to be a long night for this cat.
Just stand by with some water and save the rest of the catnip toys for tomorrow.

While cats on catnip can be pretty hilarious, you always have to regulate how much they get.
They’re always going to overindulge, so it’s a cat owner’s job to keep them from getting into the whole container of it.
Good luck!
