20 things people refuse to eat even when it’s the last thing left on the shelves
With most of us stuck in our homes and unable to go out to eat, the last few weeks have been one large game of Supermarket Sweep as people stock up on food.
Despite the relative urgency of making sure you can meal plan for the foreseeable future, there are still some things that people flat-out refuse to buy – even if they’re nutritious.
Here’s what you can expect to find on grocery store shelves even in the worst of times:
1. Gluten gluttony
Some people simply can’t afford the fancy gluten-free bread and are left in the lurch when that’s all that is left on the shelves.
But no matter how many people insist they’re allergic to gluten these days, when push comes to shove, it looks like they’re still willing to eat it when no one’s watching.
2. No one wants the song stuck in their head
Sorry, but if you have to be stuck in the house with your kids for a week, the LAST thing you need is them singing that song.
Literally any other cereal will do.
3. The chowder wars
Even a pandemic can’t overcome chowder pride.
4. Because why bother?
While many of us need to cut down on our salt intake, salt-free chips just don’t taste like much.
It seems people would just rather go without than eat the bland calories.
5. No one ever wants their peas
Peas are good for you, but it looks like that doesn’t matter to some people.
Hey, if this is the end of the world as we know it, we’re not going out choking down our greens.
6. Those could come in handy
Dried beans are probably the best thing one can buy if they’re short on cash and looking at being cooped up in their houses for a long time.
Alas, that’s still not a reason to develop a taste for lima beans.
7. Is it the lack of gluten or the abundance of halibut?
Maybe halibut seems a little decadent in times of trouble.
Or maybe people just really have an aversion to gluten-free anything.
8. Give us the carbs
Well, what can we say?
No one wants califlower pasta when they can have the real thing.
9. Because it’s gross
If you want frozen pizza we hope you like deep dish and pineapple.
Except no one does.
10. The vegans are fine
Vegans are getting the last laugh.
When the shelves are empty and we’re all feeling hungry, they’ll be able to stroll around the store and easily scoop up what shoppers left behind.
11. Popeye would be disappointed
Spinach pasta isn’t that bad, we promise!
And it lasts a lot longer than actual spinach.
12. Carnivores will be the first to fall
At this rate, vegans might be the only ones left unless we’re willing to put our carnivorous pride aside.
13. The least favorite flavor
What can we say, there’s no emergency great enough to make black licorice seem like a good idea to most of us.
14. Keep the Dasani
Dasani is just filtered tap water and has been found to contain microplastics.
And since no one needs bottled water anyway at this point (if the water supply goes, we’re in WAY bigger trouble than we could have imagined), it looks like people are willing to leave it behind in some places.
15. Fair enough
We’re not sure if this was set up or real, but we can understand why you might leave that item behind.
16. Chocolate hummus?!
Why is chocolate hummus even a thing?
Now is not the time for this kind of experimentation.
17. This shouldn’t even be a thing
We didn’t even know this flavor existed. And it looks like no one is willing to incorporate it into their Easter repertoire this year.
18. Eat your veggies
You don’t need bottled water, but you DO need nutrients.
People can only survive on snacks for so long – buy the carrots, people!
19. Waiting for summer
Apparently, hot dog fans are waiting for warmer weather. Or perhaps people know that’s not exactly the most nutritious meat to be eating right now.
Still, we wonder what people are feeding the kids whose food pyramid consists solely of hot dogs and mac and cheese.
20. Abandoned onions
We can’t help but think that perhaps they just restocked the onions.
They’re the base of so many delicious meals! How do you leave such a flavorful food behind?!
Is no one making soup stock?
