20 women who embraced their grey hair and are hotter than ever

Are you rocking the pandemic platinum? In other words, “going grey the hard way”?

Plenty of women are seeing those strands of “tinsel” after months of avoiding the salon for safety’s sake, so you’re not alone.

But now more than ever they’re also embracing their grey, seeing it as a badge of honor rather than something to vanquish.

While all of these transformations did require a trip to the salon, they’ll give you some indication of the locks you can rock next time you make an appointment.

These women look marvelous after embracing their grey hair with the help of Parisian-trained California colorist Jack Martin. And they’ve flown in from around the country to have him work his magic.

1. Going glam

Yowza! We wish we knew ahead of time that we’d look this good with silver locks.

This beauty from Texas flew in for a 10-hour appointment that involved removing all of her artificial color, some bleaching and foils, and recoloring “to create that salt and pepper look.” Then came the toner.

Hey, no one said getting there would be low-maintenance!

2. From fire to ice

This saucy redhead managed to hold on to some major vibrant red tones while her grey grew in. Bravo!

But she was ready to go natural to avoid dying her hair every few weeks, so getting it out would prove quite the challenge.

A Malibu treatment AND a color extractor were necessary to pull out the red. Then came the level 10 blonde (the brightest and whitest) in foils before Martin toned it to a pale silver.

This one took a mere 8 hours.

3. Stellar silver

No longer wanting to see her grey roots, this client came in with a head full of black box color – every stylist’s nightmare!

It takes a lot to get that color out, including a long Malibu treatment, a color extractor, bleached baby highlights, and then some more light color. This is why no one recommends you do this kind of thing at home!

It’s a lot, but the result of this 11-hour day is so chic.

4. From brass to ash

This was an 8-hour process since she had lighter hair to begin with, but pulling out that brassy tone is always going to be a chore.

Martin lightened her hair in foils to a level 10 blond, pre-toned and then toned her hair again, before giving her lowlights.

5. Long and luscious

It’s always stressful to have a harsh process done on long hair. How is it going to hold up? Are you going to need a cut?

That’s why Martin takes his time and these appointments are so long. Conditioning treatments and Olaplex are his secret weapons to keep hair healthy while he strips the color.

Here, he lightened, colored, toned – but only a professional could know what to use and how long to use it to keep hair from breaking.

6. Layered lightness

This woman got a great cut to go with her dazzling new color and it made a world of difference.

A creme lightener in foils, then the application of a permanent color with a blue additive to tone down brass, got her to that ashy color we all desire. Then it was a toner marathon to perfect the look.

7. Another black box color adventure

Tired of dying her hair with black box dye every week, this woman made the great decision to sign on to silver.

But it took 10 hours to get a shade of silver that would match her roots and allow her to be low-maintenance from then on out!

Multiple treatments were needed to get some of the color out before bleaching, applying more lightener to stubborn warm areas, and then toning twice.

8. Seeing red…then watching it go

You know that when a client starts out with red in her hair that it’s going to be an epic showdown to get rid of the warm tones.

And that’s what this was – a 9-hour fight that Martin won.

Using the same tricks he did above with a slightly higher 30-volume developer, a 4-hour foil finally gave him the right look before adding some color and canceling out the yellow with toner.

But doesn’t she look fab?!

9. Taking the gamble

Then a client flies in from Vegas, you know they’re ready to lay their cards on the table.

9 hours later, this two-toned head of hair was giving off some major glow.

You know the drill – it was a color lift, bleach, color, and tone – with a haircut to boot!

10. Brass is banished

Her brown box color was pulling out her red tones, giving her quite a bit of unintended dimension.

The trick here was pulling color and bleaching until it all reached the same shade. But 10 hours later, Martin did it.

We just want to know how many tiny foils he went through before it was over. Hundreds?

11. Va-va-va-volume

Doesn’t she look marvelous?

More porous hair can sometimes release color more quickly than planned, so she was able to go from a level 4 to a level 8 copper with just a color eraser!

Of course, she needed bleach and color and toner (anyone would), but 7 hours later, she’s looking like a grey goddess.

12. Kicking brass

Bleach and tone were the order of the day, but in order to really see the difference this color process made, Martin also straightened her curly hair.

Those curls will come back, but now she knows what kind of beautiful color is coiled up inside.

13. Blend don’t break

Martin managed to match this client’s roots perfectly by working his color magic.

The whole process took 9 hours. And there’s no sugar-coating it – that’s how long it takes to make a major change if you won’t want your hair breaking off afterward.

14. Queen vibes

She’s got a hint of Disney princess hair with the wisdom of a Queen.

After flying in from Michigan, she went through a 10-hour process to get lightened, bleached, colored, re-lightened, toned, and styled.

It’s not easy and it’s not cheap, but the hair she was left with was certainly worth the investment.

15. Silver rush

Forget the gold rush, we’re all in on silver.

This client even flew in from Argentina for an appointment! If that’s not an indication that this isn’t a DIY job, that we don’t know what is.

While it’s the same process as the rest, just think about how many foils this took – and then think about the fact that he had to reopen them all and reapply new lightener to achieve this look!

16. Worth the wait

After waiting 3 months for her appointment, this woman had a 10-hour service to go pale silver/platinum. LA and waited 3 months for her appointment.

We have to say, it was worth the wait!

17. Yellow to mellow

Make no mistake, you can’t just wash that brass right out of your hair. It’s going to take a whole day in the salon.

In this case, it took a very careful round of bleaching, new color, and toner – but she got a whole new style as well.

18. Silver siren

Martin found this super-soft-but-glowing platinum grey transformation was worth of entry into a style content.

And we have to agree. That’s at least 8 hours of work that went towards one seriously glam outcome!

19. Undoing damage

We’re loving all of these long-haired transformations. So many women assume you have to cut your hair short at a certain age (whatever that is), but it’s just not true.

Of course, if your hair is already damaged, that can make things a lot harder, but that’s why we have professional colorists!

20. Short and sweet

Of course, if you do decide to go short, that’s great, but don’t assume you’re not going to spend a long time in the salon if you decide to go all grey.

In fact, this salt and pepper look took just as much lightening, bleaching, recoloring, and toning as the rest.

But it’s amazing now natural is looks!
