20 stupid home DIY “fixes” that prove it’s sometimes best to call in the experts

“How hard can it be?” These pictures show that the answer is often, very, very hard, especially if you’re stupid.

Here’s a word of advice for people who have little to no DIY experience: call in an expert!

Yes, you’ll spend more money. But you’ll have something that actually works. Seriously, having something that works is so important.

The 20 people behind these renovations all thought that they’d save a bunch of money by doing it themselves. Instead, they just ended up with wrecked homes.

1. Just jump

Is this Narnia? from r/CrappyDesign

The first one to get inside using that door wins $2. Maybe there’s a pond on the ground, and the owner uses the door for fishing? If that’s the case, then this is a great project!

2. A job well done

Perfect from r/memes

At least when they call in an actual professional, it won’t be too hard to fix. Don’t let any pets go under that creation! Jenga!

3. Why would you want to mount one of those old TVs in the first place?

My school from r/CrappyDesign

You can get a new TV that’s that size for like $100. Or you could just stick to watching TV like it’s the 80s and crane your neck while doing so. And that’s before even mentioning the light blocking the screen!

4. Does Zeus live here?

It’s possible to imagine this looking amazing. Of course, the final result leaves a lot to be desired. As long as the owner is happy, which he probably isn’t.

5. Technically usable

I can’t have guests over and be responsible for them falling from r/mildlyinfuriating

How many sprained ankles has this thing caused? And has the door ever opened onto someone climbing the stairs? This thing causes more accidents the more you think about it.

6. Hope that bulb’s strong

How’s this even supposed to work? from r/CrappyDesign

Clack, clack, clack, smash. That’s what it’ll sound like. On the plus side, that fan looks like it might be defunct.

7. The lack of a bannister on the left is the icing on the cake

These stairs in my in-laws summerhouse. We have parties here so going down these stairs drunk is a challange. from r/CrappyDesign

The craziest thing is that this must have been intentional. What kind of murderer designed this? And last but not least, let’s put the wine across from the stairs, just to tempt people to reach for a bottle from below.

8. Because electricity and water mix

Pikbu - Strubzina Source: Pikbu - Strubzina

Technically, electricity does like water. The problem is that humans don’t. Because it causes us to die.

9. They could only have afforded stairs or a door. Not both

Honey! Check it out, our new apartment comes with a balcon- AHHhhh!! from r/CrappyDesign

Sure, this isn’t great. But if there’s a fire, this might just save your life. You know, if you survive the fall.

10. Close enough

Symmetry is overrated, right? At least it’s not gonna fall! Be thankful.

11. Where else could it go?

Who thought this placement would be a good idea? from r/CrappyDesign

At least make the pillar thing flush with the kitchen counter wall thing! What was the thought process here? I guess the fridge faces the kitchen, so it makes a stupid sort of sense.

12. Right next to the front door

Is there a second bathroom? Imagine being a guest here. You’d need to be very comfortable with the owners!

13. Just never open the door while the fan is on

At my sister’s new place… from r/CrappyDesign

If you do, then watch out for the falling fan blades! Luckily, there’s a pretty easy fix here. Just remove the door.

14. When you really want to make a wall alcove

Why not just move it to the left? from r/CrappyDesign

Sure, this isn’t as bad as some of the pictures. But it’s just confusing. Why go to so much effort for no reason?

15. The child’s bed is strictly for climbing

At least cut off part of the bannister! Or just leap over the bed. Each to their own.

16. Bad idea. Bad execution

i can feel that carpet under my wet toes already 🤢🤢🤢 from r/CrappyDesign

Why put carpet around a bath? Or even anywhere where there’s water? The wooden pillars would have been just about acceptable but still weird.

17. Another carpet calamity

Why cut the door when you can cut the carpet! (Found in basement of a friend’s newly bought house.) from r/CrappyDesign

Carpet is horrible at the best of times. Why don’t you install some nice wooden panels? Or just do this. Whatever’s good for you.

18. Because natural light is overrated

At least cleaning this window doesn’t take very long. All those neighbors are really losing out! Washing windows literally wastes minutes of time every year.

19. “I think it’s level.”

Pikabu - Velnicerider Source: Pikabu - Velnicerider

Those ropes are just an extra precaution, surely. If that thing does eventually fall, how far will it fall? Is it gonna kill someone?

20. Surprise!

Pikabu - Shurik4216 Source: Pikabu - Shurik4216

In terms of execution, this is competent. It’s just the concept that leaves a lot to be desired. Why put a toilet next to the oven?
