250 Amish men come together to pick up a barn and carry it with their hands to its new farm
One of the greatest things about playing on a sports team is learning how to work together as a team to accomplish a goal. The satisfaction of winning a game or executing a perfect play allows you to see what it means to all come together for something.
Amish group moves barn across a field using only manpower.
While in a slightly different context, that’s exactly what happened at the Hochstetler Farm. For many groups, the Amish are a religious segment that wears hats and has beards and is focused primarily in Pennsylvania. While some stereotypes are truer than others, one thing that many Amish groups have in common is their incredible ingenuity.
Due to a renouncement of certain technology, Amish groups must invent different ways of accomplishing tasks.
The main split between the Old Order Amish and Amish Mennonites happened in the 19th century. This split culminated in the differences that we associate with different groups, most famously their use or disuse of certain technology. The Mennonites typically allow for more mechanical technology and college attendance. Old Order Amish, however, live radically non-modern lives.
Without tractors, cranes, or trucks, a different way to move the barn was needed.
Knowing a bit more about the different cultures, we can assume that the group ready to move the barn was Old Order Amish. They are the ones we think of when we think of a horse and buggy.
Part of living such a secluded life forces many Amish to have incredible skills.
For Amish groups, a trade is more than a job, its how you survived. With so many people possessing such skill, it allows these groups to accomplish tasks with less technology in ways that astound watchers!
Doing the math on the barn shows how crazy the move is!
With wood being the primary material in a barn, like the one seen in the video, we can assume the barn weighs many tons! If 250 people are helping to carry it, about 225 have hands on the barn and assuming each person is carrying an average of 45 pounds, we can easily guess the barn weighs between 8,000-12,000 lbs. That is the equivalent of them carrying an African elephant (or 5.1 million skittles) above their heads and taking a stroll.
Moving with precision and skill, they move the entire barn in record time.
With lifters and coordinators, the group was able to lift and move the barn in about five minutes! Without modern equipment, we would normally assume that the process would take longer! If it was done with a crane or truck, it would probably take longer to get the crane company on the phone than it would to move the barn by hand!
Learning a new lesson from old-fashioned methods.
Through watching these skilled people work, we see how teamwork and ingenuity can make up for a lack of modern tools. The lesson that I took away from this video is that when I decide to move houses, I don’t need my friends to load furniture onto a moving truck, we can just move the entire house!
