3-year-old awarded for bravery for calling emergency services after pregnant mom takes tumble

Have you ever heard a high-stakes story and wondered, “what would I do in that situation?” It’s truly impossible to know if you would keep your composure, take action, or panic and lose your cool.

But it’s safe to say that usually when we’re conjuring up these extreme scenarios, we imagine ourselves as fully grown adults. Rarely do we ask ourselves how we would handle an unwelcome situation, as well as a certain three-year-old child, did.

One smart little girl from Somerset UK, named Emma Bazzard, inspires us to ask such questions because when she was faced with a sudden and scary situation, she responded better than we would expect most adults would.

When Emma’s mother Catherine took a sudden spill down the staircase, Emma was faced with the big responsibility of knowing what to do next.

Catherine was immediately injured after falling, and as if that wasn’t scary enough, she was barely conscious. Catherine had hit her head as a result of her fall and landed on her stomach, so she couldn’t give her three-year-old daughter instructions to call emergency services. Emma had to figure out what to do on her own.

Luckily, young Emma was a smart little girl, and she quickly jumped and ran to the phone, and called 999 for the UK emergency services.

What makes this story so incredible is that Emma had never previously been trained to call the number in the case of an emergency, but had overheard to do so when her parents were explaining what to do to her older brother over dinner one night.

Not only did Emma remember what to do, but she maintained a composure indicative of maturity beyond-her-years when she placed an emergency call that saved her mother, and the child her mother was carrying’s lives. Operator Sarah Morris wasn’t expecting to hear the voice of such a young caller, but she responded very calmly to Emma’s call.

“Ambulance services, tell me exactly what’s happened”

“Mummy fell down the stairs.”

“Your mummy fell down the stairs?”

“And she’s got a baby

That was the moment that the operator realized just how serious the situation really was. Morris, however, remained calm, while talking to little Emma.

“Sorry, has she got a baby?”

“Yes” Replies Emma.

“Did Mummy and the baby fall down the stairs at the same time?”

“Yes”

“Alright darling we’re going to hep Mummy okay, can you go up to your mummy for me?”

“Im already with her”

“Is Mummy breathing?”

“Yes.”

“How old’s the baby?

If your heart isn’t beating out of your chest as you read these words, you should consider potentially becoming an emergency call line operator, because many would not be able to maintain the level of calm that Morris did while talking to little Emma. Her ability to navigate the situation without breaking a sweat and while keeping Emma calm was incredible.

As Catherine moved in and out of consciousness, Morris put in her best effort to guide Emma through taking care of her mother, all the while keeping Emma on the line to make sure Catharine was still breathing.

When the paramedics finally arrived, Catherine was taken directly to the hospital where she received help immediately.

The fall that she had taken was so bad that it had induced labor due to a ruptured placenta, and had she not had access to the necessary drugs required to halt her labor, Catherine may have had a sudden miscarriage or given birth to a 7-week premature child. Not to mention, Catherine’s own life was at stake the entire time.

The fall had induced labor due to a ruptured placenta, and without the necessary drugs required to halt her labor, Catherine may have lost the child or had it 7 weeks premature. This is all without mentioning her own life, which was also at risk. Luckily, smart little Emma’s rush to action saved her mother and her little brother’s life, too.
