Childhood should be a happy and worry-free time. Sadly, Leah has had to fight a life-threatening disease since she was a baby. Despite this, she is still a source of joy for those in her life.
Many people take their health for granted. As children, the majority of us never had to worry about beating a disease. Leah was not so lucky.
By the age of three, Leah had spent more of her life inside the hospital than outside of it. As a baby, she was diagnosed with severe congenital neutropenia. This rare disorder causes people to have a shortage of certain white blood cells. As a result, Leah was susceptible to a range of infections. She would also be prone to bone deficiencies, such as decreased density.
Leah’s condition has resulted in many, many different treatments. By the age of three, Leah had had to undergo two bone marrow transplants.
Bone marrow procedures are difficult for adults to go through, let alone children. But Leah has remained positive throughout her ordeal.
One video of Leah’s positivity post procedures has really touched people online.
It began with Leah’s mother telling Leah that she was going to ask her some questions. Leah, with a smile on her face, was more than happy to answer these questions.
At first, Leah’s mom asked the child some basic warm-up questions, like “What’s your name?” When asked how old she was, Leah held up three fingers but couldn’t remember the word “three.”
Then Leah’s mom asked the child, “How old am I?” Leah struggled to answer this one. At first, she was honest and responded, “I don’t know.” So Leah’s mom asked her to guess. Leah guessed five. The mom was actually 36. Close enough!
Then Leah became much more confident with her answers.
She responded that her favorite color was pink, her favorite food was yogurt and that her favorite animal was a tiger (but also she was scared of them.)
Then the questions got much more emotional. The mom asked the daughter what made her feel sad. Her answer was heartbreaking.
“’cause I can’t go at your house,” Leah said. That answer really highlights just what Leah’s life was like. She didn’t consider her mom’s house her own home because of all the time she had spent in the hospital. It was just a house that she liked to spend time in to her.
Leah’s mom responded that that made her feel sad too.
Then Leah added that she was also sad because she couldn’t visit her grandma and grandpa’s house.
But she wasn’t done listing all the things that made her sad.
She said that if she could go to those places, she could be with Daisy and Sebastian. Leah’s mom then elaborated on who Daisy and Sebastian were. “You miss the doggies?” she asked.
Leah’s mom was not done with her questions. As she went on, she became overwhelmed with emotion. By the very end, she was crying.
Leah was too young to understand why her mother was crying.
And it wasn’t just Leah who was crying over the child’s answers. Over 4.7 million people have watched the video to date. The video also has over 147,000 likes. Clearly, Leah’s answers have affected many, many people.
Leah is now six years old.
Thanks to the hard-working medical professionals, she is doing so much better. She is able to live a full life, like most other kids.
