3-year-old being praised as a hero after saving mother and unborn sibling
Accidents happen and sometimes, you’re faced with a situation where you need to act quickly and remain calm in order to save someone’s life.
We often tell our kids about emergencies as they reach a certain age. In fact, some kids learn the importance of emergency phone numbers as early as 5 years old.
A 3-year old little girl unexpectedly became a hero when she was able to save the life of her mom and unborn brother one faithful day.
Emma Bazzard lives in Somerset UK. It was their usual day, and mom was doing her usual chores when she accidentally slipped and fell down the staircase.
Catherine, Emma’s mother fell so bad that she landed on her stomach. She was struggling to regain her consciousness and wasn’t able to even ask Emma for help.
She was also around 7 months pregnant – a very dangerous situation and in a matter of minutes, something can get really serious.
Emma was so young and her parents didn’t even teach her about 999 or the emergency phone number. Though, little did they know that when they were instructing her older brother about emergency situations, she was listening and she remembered what to do.
The little hero was quick to act and she immediately grabbed the phone and dialed 999.
Operator Sarah Morris was the one to answer the call. Her tone of voice immediately changed when she realized that she was talking to a little girl.
She was composed and was able to get all the important details needed to send help.
Operator Sarah Morris : “Ambulance services, tell me exactly what’s happened?”
Emma: “Mummy fell down the stairs.”
Operator Sarah Morris : “Your mummy fell down the stairs?”
Emma: “And she’s got a baby…”
Those words would make anyone’s heart race. Sarah immediately verified the information.
Operator Sarah Morris: “Sorry, has she got a baby?”
Emma: “Yes”
Operator Sarah Morris: “Did Mummy and the baby fall down the stairs at the same time?”
Emma: “Yes”
Operator Sarah Morris: “Alright darling we’re going to help Mummy okay, can you go up to your mummy for me?”
Emma: “I’m already with her”
Operator Sarah Morris: “Is Mummy breathing?”
Emma: “Yes.”
Operator Sarah Morris: “Mummy’s breathing is she?”
Emma: “Yes.”
After verifying that Catherine was still breathing, Sarah already gathered the needed information to send help. She also wanted to verify the information about the baby.
Operator Sarah Morris: “Alright my lovely, bear with me a second. Stay on the phone. I’m not going to hang up the phone, ok?”
Operator Sarah Morris: “How old is the baby?
Emma: “It’s in Mummy’s tummy”
Turns out, Catherine was 7 months pregnant and she, unfortunately, landed on her tummy.
Operator Sarah Morris: “The baby’s in Mummy’s tummy, ok sweetie…
Do you know where Mummy is hurt, apart from her head? Is she hurt anywhere else?”
Emma: “No”
Operator Sarah Morris: “…Has mummy got her eyes open is she talking to you?”
Emma: “She’s going back to sleep now”
Sarah then assured little Emma that an ambulance was on its way and that she won’t hang up and will wait with Emma.
When the ambulance and the paramedics arrived, Catherine was rushed to the hospital where she was treated.
As it turned out, Catherine had started labor because of a ruptured placenta. Good thing the doctors were able stop the labor and both mummy and baby were safe.
Because of Emma’s heroic deed, she was able to save her Mummy and her baby brother. At a very young age, she was able to act quickly and calmly – something that we would have a hard time doing even as adults.
A certificate of bravery from the NHS Foundation Trust was awarded to the young hero and the calm and caring operator was also mentioned. We’re so proud of you Emma!
