35 “Innocent” Gifts From Children That Made Adults Laugh
All parents treasure the gifts their kids give them. The macaroni art, the homemade Mother’s Day cards, the scribbled family portraits — they all go into a keepsake box somewhere so they always have mementos of when their child was little.
But not every gift from a child is just sweet. Some of them are downright hilarious. That might be because the kid in question is already developing their funny bone. Or it might be because they’re too innocent to realize their gift is…unusual.
What does unusual mean in this context? It could be inappropriate, embarrassing, or just downright silly. Kids are masters of all those things, but more often than not, they have no idea what implications their gifts have.
And that’s okay but those gifts might not make it into the keepsake box. Well, unless you have a twisted sense of humor…then they’re DEFINITELY going in the keepsake box. They might even get pinned up on the fridge.
A word to the wise, though: if you do keep these beautiful gifts, your kids will one day be old enough to understand them — and just might be embarrassed. But for now, they have no idea why you’re laughing.
1. Thanks, um…me too
Kids sometimes get a little weird around elderly people. A lot of them have a fascination with the idea of death. Unfortunately, they also don’t know how to express that without being weird.
2. Pennies. It’s supposed to say “pennies”
When this little girl found out her mother was going to Las Vegas to enjoy the casinos, she made her this gift. The hilariously unfortunate spelling is supposed to say “pennies.”
3. Death is imminent
When one dad turned 40y, his son decided to make him a homemade birthday card. Apparently, he’s not optimistic about how long his father will live.
4. It’s the thought that counts
One middle-schooler tried to give their teacher a red rose — isn’t that sweet? They didn’t realize that the “rose” was actually a red, lacy thong.
5. How generous
This kid thinks they’re pretty funny with this joke. They also think that people go to nursing homes in their early 60s, which is a decade or two earlier than average!
6. It’s just a sticker
One little girl was having fun making a page with stickers on it for her dad. Then she asked her mom if she could include the big “sticker” on it. Of course, her mom said yes.
7. Well…yes, yes, it is
This was a Mother’s Day gift for this little girl’s grandmother, who must have been a little bit disturbed. Although her reaction definitely depends on her sense of humor. I would’ve hung it up by the front door.
8. What wonderful gifts
One kid felt sad that his parents weren’t getting stocking stuffers for Christmas like he was, so he decided to put some gifts together for them. He included all the things his parents like — money, candy, beer, and pens, apparently.
9. My favorite Valentine theme is “a little concerning”
I’m going to assume this child didn’t intend for the card to come across a little “threatening,” but it does. That “You are lucky to be alive” line definitely sounds a little concerning had it come from someone else.
10. It’s a portrait
One teacher was thrilled to receive several portraits of themselves from their young students. But this one was by far the favorite, simply because it’s just so bizarre. But they do say you never think pictures of yourself look realistic.
11. Hindsight is everything
It took this child more than 30 years to realize just how weird it was that he’d bought this for his dad at age 4. The three-decade mystery of why that cashier was so uncomfortable was finally solved!
12. Thanks, honey
Most parents treasure the cards their kids make for them and this kid’s parents are probably no different. But I’m not sure they’re going to want to put this card on the fridge.
13. Looks delicious
Who doesn’t dream of having breakfast in bed at least once in their lifetime? But personally, my version doesn’t include quite as many sharks or Legos. Well, just a few sharks and Legos.
14. Captain Obvious got an early start
This kid is demonstrating that he understands how family relationships work. Or maybe he’s demonstrating that he has no idea how family relationships work.
15. He thinks he’s so funny
Don’t you hate it when kids start to learn from your own corny jokes? Just take this kid, who planned ahead for this brownie/brown E joke and thought it was just hilarious.
16. Mother’s Day gifts in France?
They’re wrapped up so beautifully in a floral box with red tissue paper! No one would ever guess the box was full to the brim with gooey snails. Dare I ask why?
17. That’s not a terrible lunch
This lucky parent got their lunch packed by their child. It included everything needed for a healthy, balanced meal at work, including their daily recommended servings of macaroni, oatmeal, and beer.
18. There’s nothing like the love between an employee and a slave
I think this kid was trying to say something sweet about how hard their parents work for them. But that’s not exactly the message that came across. It’s got a more — how do I say this — Working Girl vibe.
19. They celebrate differently in their home
No matter what your dad is like, you’ve probably heard a couple of dad jokes in your time. This dad came up with a popular one that changed the way his family celebrated a holiday. Or maybe he just has a very imaginative child.
20. It looks exactly like him
This father thought his daughter’s artistic portrayal of him was so hilarious that he recreated it. He also added that he’d be signing her up for art school as soon as he got the chance.
21. That’s an awkward way to say “trail mix”
This dad’s little girl wanted to do a nice gesture by giving him a homemade pack of the trail mix he loved. She came up with a cute little name for it, too — one that might have a second meaning.
22. What’s breakfast without a little danger?
Who doesn’t love to have firecrackers as part of their breakfast? Personally, my favorite detail about the meal is the fact they bit off a piece of cheese.
23. A little Dwight Schrute in the making
This kid was supposed to be making a Get Well Soon card for a relative in the hospital. Instead, he inadvertently recreated the “It is your birthday” scene from “The Office.”
24. I enjoy carbs with my carbs
This sweet little boy is oh so proud of the meal he made for his parent. In case you couldn’t tell from the picture, it’s a waffle sandwich and I’m pretty sure they’re frozen.
25. This child is a master negotiator
This guy’s little girl loved to play video games but knew they were reserved as a special treat. One morning, she tried to butter her dad up a little bit by providing him with this nutritious breakfast.
26. Oh. okay
I think this child is trying to express a sweet message along the lines of “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Unfortunately, that is…not what this card says.
27. What a beautiful…giraffe
Parents adore their children’s artwork, often hanging on to it long after the kids have grown up and moved out. Somehow, I don’t know if this phallic giraffe will make it into the keepsake box.
28. I can’t decide if this is sweet or not
This sweetly innocent apology probably comes from a kid who scrambled for a gift at the last minute but it’s their efforts that mean more than anything. Their wording on the card needs a little work.
29. This child is an honest assessor
This kid is going to be upfront with Rachel: she’s good, but she’s not the BEST. At least she got a little “Love you” at the end of the letter.
30. Happy 88th birthday
This child was trying really hard to make a thoughtful birthday card for their great-grandparent’s 88th birthday. They don’t really know anything about the elderly except they’re getting close to death.
31. (Not s0) beautiful reflection
Perhaps this young one is trying to prepare mom for the future looking in the mirror and seeing a few extra “wrinkles” but it looks more like a baked potato wrapped in foil. Either way, it’s always best to remember it’s the thought that counts.
32. The best what now?
I’m going to take a shot in the dark and guess this kid was trying to write “bestest” day. The other option is that it says “death day” and that’s just creepy.
33. We won’t be putting this one on the fridge
Some kids’ drawings are sweet, some are confusing, and some will make every adult in the room do a double-take. This one falls into that third category.
34. Who wouldn’t love this?
When one little girl asked her brother what he liked, he said “mustaches, guitar, and sloths.” To his amazement, she returned an hour later with the best birthday present anyone could have asked for.
35. Dad jokes = mastered
This little boy is starting early. His parents raised an eyebrow when he asked them if they could read minds. Then he supplied this paper: mind, mind, mind…
