This story focuses on 4-year-old Caleigh Concannon. It’s certainly not every day a story about someone so young makes the news but, this a special little girl and she deserves every bit of recognition.

Caleigh has been a dog lover since she was born. You can probably thank her mother, Heather Concannon since she is a dog lover and together they volunteer at Golden Opportunities for Independence. It’s a farm that trains dogs to be service animals and it starts from when the dogs are just puppies.

The farm’s mission is to give people with a disability a sense of independence and to live a more fulfilling life with the love and assistance of a service animal. The farm not only trains but also breeds these beautiful helpers.

Providing the training and costs associated with service dogs can be staggering. A fully trained animal can range from $15,000 to $35,000 depending on the level of assistance the recipient requires. So Golden Opportunities for Independence askes future handlers to raise $5000 to be put towards their service dog.

One way to help curb operational costs is to rely on volunteers like Caleigh and her mom. The extra help can truly add up.

It was their first day for Caleigh and her mother volunteering at the Golden Opportunities training farm, Caleigh asked to use the restroom. She knew right where it was and took off running.

She then saw something that she knew was wrong and came back quickly to tell her mom that “there is a man sleeping on the floor.” Heather knew exactly what she meant and sprung into action.

The man she thought was snoozing on the floor turned out to be Michael Flynn, the farm’s director of operations. And he wasn’t sleeping; he was having an epileptic seizure.

But how did a 4-year-old know that something was wrong?

“My dad has diabetes.”

Caleigh has been trained to help her dad since he has diabetes and can sometimes pass out. The family has talked about what to do in that situation. She knew when someone is “sleeping” it can be from being sick and this was exactly what she thought was happening to Michael.

Michael knew that Caleigh was a great helper, but he had no idea on this day she would save his life. Thank goodness Caleigh has been trained to get help in an emergency. Otherwise, the outcome could’ve been much different and much more devastating.

“I am so proud of her. I am just in awe at the responsibility and the seriousness and her perception in handling the situation.”

All the people directly involved in the situation were so proud of the little girl. Even the Walpole Police Department were so impressed that they awarded Caleigh a Community Hero Award, said Walpole Police Chief John Carmichael.

“The situation could have been a lot worse than it was and so as a result, she really is a community hero.”

She was also awarded a pair of movie tickets that I’m sure she appreciated even more, as a four-year-old would.

Some adults might not have been able to remain calm like Caleigh, and respond as quickly as she did.
