5 cool facts about tuxedo cats that most people don’t know

Tuxedo cats are gorgeous felines who are quite well-known among cat lovers. Their eye-catching coats, breathtaking eyes and purr-fect personalities make them ideal pets. Many are thinking about adopting them in so we thought it would be great timing to list five fun facts about these kitties!

1. They are named after their two-colored coats

Tuxedo cats are not a breed in itself. They are called so because of the two-color pattern found on their furs. To be more specific, their chests are generally white, while their faces are black. Sometimes, their necks, feet and chins are also white.

That being said, tuxedo cats do not always have to be black and white. Sometimes they are gray, silver or orange with patches of white. The precise way the colors are distributed on these cats’ bodies make it look like they are wearing formal wear. Hence, they are called tuxedo cats!

2. The pattern is not breed specific

Being a tuxedo cat is not characteristic limited to one breed. In fact, there are many varieties that have these classy patches. The Cornish Rex, British and American Shorthairs, Persians, Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats are among the lucky ones who have the physical characteristics of tuxedos.

3. There are many famous tuxedo cats

Tuxedo cats sound fancy but do you know that some of them lived in luxury? One modern-day famous tuxedo is former US President Bill Clinton’s cat who lived in the White House while he was in office.

In the past, known geniuses like William Shakespeare, Ludwig Van Beethoven and Sir Isaac Newton preferred the company of these smart kitties. Meanwhile, in pop culture, famous tuxedos include the Magical Mr. Mistoffeles from the play “Cats” and Sylvester from Looney Toons.

There was also a known Tuxedo called Stan who “ran for mayor” in Halifax, Canada. His candidacy was endorsed by celebrities like Ellen de Generes and Anderson Cooper. Although never officially a candidate, this famous cat was able to raise awareness about stray cats.

4. They are genetically bi-colored

Tuxedos are genetically-built to be two-colored or piebald. The special way their faces look like its covered in masks coupled with patches distributed as if they are wearing formal wear is nature’s way of dressing up these sassy felines.

Though they share common physical characteristics, each tuxedo cat has a unique personality. Some are more adventurous than others. There is a a hypothesis that these kitties are smarter than others. This is very hard to prove but certainly, stories of tuxedo owners have something to do with it! For example, there are many stories floating around that they develop incredibly quickly.

One thing is sure though, their moms and dads are always ready for some TLC from these kitties. They love spending time with their families and they are cuddle warriors.
