5 DIY tricks to help prevent your glasses from fogging up when wearing a mask

Our newest wardrobe addition has been a mask and it’s not as comfortable as it seems. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention has insisted we wear a cloth mask during any activity outside of our homes because of COVID-19. While we want to do everything we can to “flatten the curve” these masks take a bit of getting used to. Masks have been known to rub people’s ears raw because they’re too tight along with many other uncomfortable attributes.

But for all of you that wear glasses every day, a mask can be really irritating especially with foggy glasses.

1. A Perfect Fit

Make sure your mask is able to fit your face properly. Your mask should fit snug around your nose and upper cheeks, you don’t want your breath to slip through the sides so it goes through to your glasses. If you tighten your ear straps that can help it fit more comfortably around your face as well. Adding a filter inside of your mask will also help the air go through the mask rather than around the sides. You can use simple household products to create a filter as well such as a coffee filter or a paper towel!

2. Fit-A-Nose

You’ll want a mask that fits compressed above the bridge of your nose. A different style of mask can help, one that molds around your nose. There are some made that have a bendable metal strip so you can fix it around your nose, but those a pretty hard to find on the shelves. You can make a DIY mask and add pipe cleaner around the top of the mask so you don’t have to deal with fogged up glasses

3. Soapy Water

This technique helps if you don’t have any anti-fog on hand! Simply wash the lenses of your glasses with soap and water right before you put on a mask. According to The National Center for Biotechnology Information says this leaves a thin film that reduces the surface tension which prevents mist from your glasses.

4. Tape Trick

If you need a more snug nose piece there’s a trick that the medical pros use. You can use athletic or medical tape to press the mask down to your face so no air will slip through. The regular household tape isn’t the best to use and can irritate your skin to try to find an athletic bandage to help with movement and comfort.

5. Tissue & Paper Towel Trick

A tissue or paper towel has been known to help your glasses from fogging up. Just fold a napkin or paper towel in a rectangle and place it around the bridge of your mask so it helps absorb moisture and also forms around your nose better. You might need to use that medical tape to keep it secure as well.
