Deep within a warren of tunnels in South Korea lay a hidden dog meat farm. The Humane Society of the United States performed a raid on the farm, freeing 55 dogs from certain death. Up until that point, the organization had taken six other such farms, all its cages emptied of their occupants.

The dogs are freed from their life of confinement

The dogs got their first taste of fresh air and direct sunlight as workers with the organization pulled them from their cages and carried them through the tunnels to the outside. The eventual goal of the organization is to place each animal in a loving home where they can receive the treatment that all living creatures deserve.

Life being trapped in a dog meat farm

In their previous life, the dogs existed in a subterranean world in makeshift cases, the smell of urine and feces ever-present. The building they lived in had no windows and so the dogs never got to see the sun. Finally, though, the hidden meat farm was discovered, just like the others before it.

Imagine being trapped in such a situation, no hope for a normal life, destined to end up as meat on someone’s table. That is the reality that faces the dogs held in such farms. Thankfully, rescuers with The Humane Society of the United States were able to discover this one’s location and take swift action.

The conditions on the farm were horrible

As the rescuers entered its unventilated confines, their eyes and nose burned from the overpowering smell. Tears welled up in their eyes from the odors present, mixing with the real tears they shed as they witnessed the depravity the dogs had been forced to live in. The dogs barked at the rescuers as they worked to free them, almost as if crying out for help.

The dogs trusted their rescuers as they were carried outside

One rescuer grabbed a tiny dog with matted fur. The dog, while almost blind, seemed to sense that the person grabbing him was there to help. So, he allowed his rescuer to carry him out through the dark tunnels to the light of day. The sunlight might have been a little too much for the poor dog’s eyes, but he was finally free. He put his life in the hands of the person holding him and was rewarded with fresh air.

The fight continues

Chances are this is far from the last dog meat farm that the organization will raid, freeing its occupants. Rescuers can expect to have to journey into dark and hidden corners in locations around the world, the odor almost too much. And again, they will shed tears as they witness the atrocities that man has visited upon his fellow-creatures.
