1. Float your furniture
Floating your furniture simply means to open up space around the corners of the room. People love to place beds and drawers in against walls but it actually takes up mental space. Instead, place beds in the middle of the room. This creates more visual space.
2. Play with your windows
There are a few things you can do with your windows. Carr says:
“Mounting the drapery rod higher than the window or door can give the illusion of taller ceilings and a more open space,”
You can do something similar with the width as well. Extend your rod longer than the window to give the feel that the window is larger than it is.
3. Rearrange your mirrors
Mirrors are like little magic tricks in a space. They work because they bounce light around, changing the dynamic of most rooms and spaces. An easy trick is to place a mirror across from a window to bounce the light around the room. This will make it feel bigger.
4. Place lights well
Keeping a room well lit will help. If you have an underused room simply move a lamp to another room that you want to make feel larger. If a room is well lit and bright throughout, it feels larger.
5. Keep surfaces clear
Clutter is the enemy to space. When you have clutter on desks, drawers, and more, it can make the room feel cramped. Try putting things in cabinets and drawers if possible. When you need to pull them out, just put it back after.
“The more open surfaces you can clear off and declutter, the more open and large a space will look,”
6. Hang artwork correctly
This can be a bit tricky but there are some secrets here. Artwork is normally hung at eye-level. The problem is that not everyone is the same height! Usually, keeping the base 60-65 inches from the floor is a good key.
7. Don’t block windows
Another simple fix is to make sure nothing is blocking your windows. Sometimes people have a tendency to put a lamp in front of a window but that is counterproductive to making a room feel more spacious.
8. Don’t take up unnecessary floor space
If you have furniture hanging about that you never use, you can put it in storage! The more is on the floor, the more the room feels cramped. If there is anything that isn’t necessary to have out, think about putting it away until needed. You can always get collapsable pieces if it is a common piece.
