This 89-square-foot tiny home was built by a 13-year-old for just $1500

Most people can’t imagine living in space that’s only 89 square feet. But over the past several years, tiny homes, as they’re referred to, have become all the rage. If you pay attention to the news, you’ve seen stories about companies that build these houses to help the homeless. Other times, potential buyers lean this direction because these homes are affordable, convenient, versatile, and simple.

While a house this size isn’t nearly as complicated to build as one with 1,500 square feet, there’s still a lot of ingenuity that goes into both the planning and construction phases. That’s why people are blown away by the fact that a tiny house this size was built by none other than a 13-year-old boy.

He’s no ordinary 13-year-old

Luke Thill who lives in Dubuque, Iowa had a goal of using his parent’s backyard as the building ground for a tiny house. His other goal — to build the house by himself. He succeeded. Not only did the house get built but when finished, it was beyond amazing.

Okay, he had a small amount of help but not much

While his parents helped, it was on a very small scale. For the most part, Luke built this tiny house by himself. Before he could get started, he first had to come up with some money. So, he spent the summer months mowing lawns to raise $1,500. In exchange for the electrical work, he cleared out the garage of his dad’s friend, an electrician.

Using sustainable materials

Sure, Luke had to buy some things but most of the materials required for this house were either reclaimed or salvaged. For instance, he gathered a front door from a friend of his uncle, siding leftover from his grandmother’s home, and various other unique places.

It wasn’t long before the frame was done

By the time Luke put all the pieces of the puzzle together, he ended up with a miniature structure that looked anything but cheap. All his family members and friends were astounded at what this kid could do. Did we mention he was only 13?

The big reveal

With the house finished, it was now time to reveal it. There it was, 10 feet tall, 5.5 feet wide, and a total of 89 square feet. But wait, there’s more. Luke had a third goal. He wanted a cool place where he and some friends could hang out. After installing a microwave, small refrigerator, and television, he achieved that as well.

Tiny in size yet big in design

There are even a table and chairs and a loft. No, Luke can’t stand up in it and in fact, his head hits the ceiling when he sits. But he doesn’t mind. This place is incredible. Luke even added lots of nooks and crannies for things like the remote control, books, and small electronic devices. There’s no question…he’s the coolest kid on the block.

I see a bright future for this young man

For one thing, Luke has determination and drive. Those two things alone will take him far in life. But he’s also creative and not afraid to try new things. In the meantime, he has a great hangout. Since he’s still a teenager, his parents won’t let him live in the tiny house full-time but he stays out there as much as he can.
