America welcomes back 92 military K9s from Afghanistan now on their way to loving homes

Military Working Dogs (MWDs) work every day alongside U.S. service members to make our nation safer. And just like their human counterparts, MWDs face the possibility of injury and death at the hands of enemy combatants in countries around the world. Recently, 92 MWDs were brought back to the states where they could live the life they never knew.

Just like our nation’s vets, MWDs deserve the best in care and the respect of everyone in this country. AMK9 is the organization involved in bringing the K9s home. AMK9 is a leading provider of K9 detection services around the world. And while they provide some of the K9s that are crucial to the mission of the U.S. military, the organization also cares for these K9s once they finish their tours.

The U.S. government approached AMK9 for help

It was the U.S. government who reached out to AMK9 to help in the mission of bringing these 92 K9s back home to the U.S. The K9s had finished their deployments in Afghanistan and needed to get back home. Being over 7,000 miles away.

The planning of the mission was crucial

The planning that went into the mission was mind-blowing. Everything from crates, food, and water, as well as vets and bathroom breaks, had to be taken into account. Once they reach the states, the K9s must then be placed in loving homes, hopefully, with the handlers they served with in Afghanistan.

“As far as what will happen to these veteran canines,” Guy Owens, VP of Operations at AMK9, said, “A lot of them are coming back to be adopted, to go to homes where they’ll spend the rest of their days enjoying life, and that’s a good thing.”

Here is a video clip of these MWDs returning home.

The job of MWDs

MWDs fill a lot of roles in the U.S. military. They help in the detection of explosive devices, bolster security operations, and also perform search and rescue. Each time they go out in the field, especially when enemy forces are present, they put their lives on the line. And just like the handlers and other soldiers they served beside, they deserve a chance at a normal life once they retire.

Update on the K9s

AMK9 has proven itself committed to these military veterans, viewing them as viable members of society and heroes returning from war. In reality, while MWDs serve an important role during wartime, they are more than a piece of military equipment to be discarded once they have served their usefulness.

AMK9 recently gave an update on the 92 K9s and their lives following their return to the U.S. They also talked about some of the people involved in facilitating the transfer from a theater of war to life in the States. Some of them even continued to serve in K9 roles once they returned to the U.S.
