Lonely widow builds giant pool in his backyard to lure the neighborhood kids to his house
Keith Davison, a 94-year-old retired judge, is still enjoying the sounds of laughter and children playing.
Davison installed a pool four years ago after his life became a little too quiet. He had lost his wife, Evy, to cancer in 2016 after 66 years of marriage.
Davison’s grief was understandable and he was incredibly lonely.
“You just can’t imagine what it’s like. You cry a lot. That’s just the way it is because she’s not here,” Davison shared.
Despite many people seek serenity and peace in their later years, Davison knew that he’d had enough.
He decided to install a 32-foot-long, 9-foot-deep in-ground pool with a diving board.
When he shared his plan, most of his neighbors thought he was joking.
“This spring when I saw him marking the yard, I told my husband, he’s really going to put a pool in his backyard,” Jessica Huebner said.
Fortunately for Davison, his house is no longer quiet.
The kids from the neighborhood began to appear, exactly as he had anticipated.
Davison’s new addition was like a gift to the kids in his neighborhood in a town that didn’t have an outdoor public pool.
Many people in Davison’s community have been moved by his story.
“It’s him spreading joy throughout our neighborhood for these kids,” Huebner says.
“Now we’re going to be here every day,” says Jaime Mundal, a neighboring mom.
When Davison informed his neighbors that he didn’t have any grandchildren, Huebner responded,
“You kind of adopted our whole neighborhood of kids, these are your grandkids.”
Davison is still spending his days poolside, four years later.
He’s listening to the giggles and splashing all around him.
Davison understands that installing a pool may not be the most prudent thing to do at his age, but that is not why he did it.
It was a good thing for the neighborhood, but it was even better for him.
“I’m not sitting by myself looking at the walls. Besides, what else would you think of doing where you could have a whole bunch of kids over every afternoon?” he said.
Davison has been known to take a dip in the pool when the kids go home for the day.
His rules for the kids are straightforward: bring a parent or grandparent with you while swimming.
We’re pretty sure the first rule is to have fun and enjoy life… which Davison has done
admirably.
Many people commended his selfless reward to the community.
“It’s refreshing to see good news. God bless this young-at-heart gentleman!”
Someone wished for him to be joyful all the time.
One wished him to be joyful always.
“What a sweetheart!! Hope he never gets lonely again. “
Another person left a comment saying,
“The world needs more people like the judge – lovely gesture !. And when the little girls says’ Thank you’ – the heart melts !”
