The woman in this story hadn’t flown for over 15 years. She had no idea how she would get through the ordeal. But help came in an unlikely form.

Even if you don’t suffer from a fear of flying, you can surely understand it.

Sitting in a cramped hunk of metal that ascends into the air at a rapid speed would be downright crazy if it weren’t so commonplace. And there’s also the in-flight safety videos reminding you of the danger, the restricted air, the turbulence and much more to worry you.

For some people, the fear of flying is so strong that they avoid traveling long distances all together. The 96-year old woman in this story is one of them.

She and her husband retired to San Diego many years ago. Since her husband passed, she has been alone. She has family in Kansas City. But due to her fear of flying, she had not gone to visit them since her husband passed on.

Of course, the woman’s family sometimes comes to visit her. But they are still in work, meaning that they can’t get on a plane to San Diego as frequently as they would like. So when the woman learned that none of them could head down for her 97th birthday, she realized that she would have to face her fears.

She had no idea how she would cope with flying without her husband. As she sat on the plane, she was shaking dramatically. But then someone helped her.

A young man sat in the seat next to the woman. He could tell that she was going through a hard time on the plane. So he started talking to her in a calm, respectful manner. The woman started relaxing because of this.

But then the plane started to move, and she panicked once more. Knowing that she could trust the young man next to her, she asked if she could take his hand. He said that that would be fine.

Thanks to the young man, the woman was able to get through the takeoff.

By now, many people around the woman and the young man had observed what was taking place.

They were in awe of the young man. He had gone out of his way to make the person next to him feel better in a hard time. He had nothing to gain out of it, but he did it anyway.

Later, the plane hit some turbulence. The woman started panicking again. So the man let the woman hug him until the bumpy part of the ride was over.

This moment really had an impact on one passenger who was observing the whole thing, Megan Ashley. She was so heartened that she decided to take some pictures and post the event to Facebook.

“It made me smile the whole flight as he comforted her. This man was her flight angel.” – Megan Ashley.

Even once the plane had landed in Kansas City, the young man kept on helping the young woman.

“He held her bag, helped her get off the plane and into the wheelchair, and when she got confused wondering where her daughter went […], he stayed with her until she caught up with her daughter who got separated from her. I walked away sobbing happy tears being so thankful for people like this wonderful human.” – Megan Ashley.

Thanks to Megan Ashley’s post, many other people have been heartened by the young man’s actions.
