98-year-old mom moves into same nursing home as her 80-year-old son to help take care of him
Ada Keating and her son Tom Keating have always lived together.
So, it was only natural for Ada to move into the same Liverpool supportive home as her son who moved in after needing extra care.
The 98-year-old mom said she moved into Moss View care home in Huyton, Liverpool so she could look after her 80-year-old son.
“You never stop being a mom,” she said.
The pair, who are from Wavertree, have a special relationship and like to spend time together.
Ada had four children with her husband Harry who passed. Tom is the oldest and has two younger sisters barbara and Margi.
His sister Janet passed away when she was just 13. Before their retirement, Tom was a painter and decorator at HE Simm building services.
Ada served as an auxiliary nurse at the former Mill Road Hospital.
Tom never married and lived with his mom until moving into the supportive care home. Now that she’s moved in, he gets to see her regularly again.
“They’re very good here and I’m happy to see my mum more now she lives here,” He said.
Even though they don’t live in their own home, Ada has never stopped being a mom.
“She’s very good at looking after me,” Tom said. “Sometimes she’ll say ‘Behave yourself!’”
They even have their own special routine. Ada visits her son’s room every morning and night to say good morning and good night.
They spend their days playing games or watching their favorite TV show “Emmerdale.”
“When I go out to the hairdressers he’ll look for me to see when I’m coming back. When I get back he’ll come to me with his arms outstretched and give me a big hug,” she says.
Their family says that it’s a relief that the two are together and can watch out for each other. They are regularly visited by Ada’s granddaughter and Tom’s niece Debi Higham.
The rest of the family likes to visit often too.
“There’s no parting them! It’s reassuring for us that they’re both getting looked after 24/7,” Higham said.
Care home manager Philip Daniels says is very rare to see moms and children living in the same facility together.
Because of this, the facility’s staff says they are happy to accommodate the two with whatever they need to maintain their close relationship.
They hope to make Ada and Tom’s time together special.
“They’re inseparable,” Daniels said.
Ada and Tom’s touching mother-and-son tale ended up going viral.
It was viewed almost half a million times on Jewish Life’s YouTube page.
“To that lady, her son is still her little baby. I have been to a retirement home and the people who live there are not really all that old. This lady just wanted to help take care of her little boy. This dude is very lucky to have a mother is still living to help take care of him,” one YouTube commenter wrote.
