Master chef shares the best tip for cooking silk-free corn on the cob
As the famous TikTok song says, it’s a “big lump of knobs that has the juice.”
Corn is one of the most versatile crops in the world.
Because of its ubiquity, heartiness, and innate flavor, it has seen widespread use all over the world.
Did we mention it’s utterly delicious?
Some use corn for salads, muffins, flatbread, and soups. Others also eat corn as is and it’s a favorite snack in other countries.
While there are many ways to cook and prepare corn, a YouTube video shows what may be the easiest one.
There are many ways to cook it.
Corn can be cooked by scraping all the knobs and stir-frying it. It can also be done by steaming or boiling. In some cases, corn can be grilled with cob and all.
Chef John from Food Wishes showed people how to prepare corn in a way that those pesky hair-like things won’t end up between your teeth.
Want silk-free corn? See your microwave.
The first step in this simple “recipe” is to place your corn cob in the microwave.
Don’t peel it or do anything with it.
Just place it in the microwave with skin, silk, and all. He then set the timer for 3 minutes and a half.
If you’re superstitious or function through fun instructions, you can opt to punch in 3 minutes and 33 seconds.
That way, you’ll only press one button on the microwave. Talk about a hack within a hack.
He also encouraged people to do something else in those 3 minutes. For Chef John, he practiced the only dance move he knows.
Once done, take the corn out of the microwave.
Remember that even if they don’t look like they can hurt you, things cooked in the microwave are always piping hot.
Get a fresh hand towel so you can handle the ear of corn much easier.
Put the corn onto a chopping board.
Using a sharp or serrated knife, cut the base of the corn. This includes the bottom part and half an inch of stalk.
Don’t peel the corn skin nor slice it in half.
With the bottom cap cut, hold the corn tip where the silky strands are.
Squeeze the corn out of its skin slowly and carefully. Make sure you’re using a thick fabric to prevent burns from steam.
Brush some butter or margarine, and sprinkle some salt. You can also top it with some bonito flakes if you want to serve it in a fancy way.
People all over the internet also shared their variations.
“I’ve been doing exactly this for 20 years. The only difference is my cooking time is 444,” one comment said, pointing out that one might need to experiment with cooking times, “This works every time! Delicious!”
“I’ve been cooking my corn on the cob for over 10 years – 2 minutes on each side – always perfect. I like to cool it and slice it into salads or pasta,” another said.
“This recipe is a lifesaver for college students! I had no idea you could make such perfect corn in the microwave!” said another comment.
