Hero born without arms sews face masks with her feet to fight coronavirus

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) has become a new addition to most of our wardrobes. The global pandemic of COVID-19 has us all in pursuit to “flatten the curve” and eliminate the spread of this virus. The CDC has advised us all to wear a face mask anytime we leave our homes to go grocery shopping or even just for a walk around the block.

But with such a high demand for PPE, it has our healthcare workers struggling to find the medical-grade masks to keep themselves safe.

That’s when the revolution of mask making began and every amateur to expert sewer has picked up a needle and thread. People all over the world are sewing handmade masks for family and friends and are even donating them to people in need such as grocery and restaurant workers!

But one incredible woman is inspiring us all to do everything we can to limit the spread of coronavirus.

32-year-old Norfarrah Syahirah Shaar from Malaysia was born without her arms and adapts accordingly doing most everything with her feet. Yes, that includes sewing! Norfarrah had always wanted to learn how to use a sewing machine so she could make her own clothes.

With her passion for learning and loads of patience, Norfarrah learned how to use a sewing machine with her feet 8 years ago and has been sewing ever since.

But with medical staff desperate for PPE, Norfarrah and 34 of her colleagues made it their mission to help their town of Selangor, Malaysia. They’ve teamed up to sew PPE such as gowns and face masks for medical workers on the frontlines of COVID-19. Norfarrah said that each team member has a different role and explained,

“Someone will measure and cut the fabric, another will draw the polar, and someone else will sew the PPE. I can sew eight PPE gowns a day.”
