Woman stuffs dog in trash bag and dumps it in garbage so she can move in with boyfriend
When you move, you usually get rid of the items that you don’t want any more. If the items are still useable, you can donate them or give them to family or friends instead. But what would you do with a pet?
One Pennsylvania woman thought it was OK to dump her dog in the trash when she moved to Texas to be with her boyfriend.
Thrown away like a piece of trash
The woman placed the dog in a trash bag and then threw it in the trashcan outside. This was even though friends of the woman had asked her if she wanted them to take the pet off of her hands.
Instead of agreeing to this alternative, the woman told them not to bother. That was when she left the poor dog in the trash to suffocate and die of starvation.
Saved by a friendly sanitation worker
Fortunately for the dog, a sanitation worker, named Nathan Binnie, found the dog struggling to break free from the bag on trash day. Freeing her, he gave her some of his lunch before taking her to the local Humane Society.
“It was shocking,” he told WTAE-TV Pittsburgh, “to see an animal like that, and I just wanna make sure everything’s OK.”
Finding the person responsible
At this point, The Humane Society of Westmoreland County stepped in to take care of the dog. In addition to taking the dog — which they named Fawna — they also notified the authorities about what had happened.
The police took over the investigation to determine who had done this to Fawna so that the person could be brought to justice.
Fawna recovers and is adopted
As for Fawna, she was taken to the shelter to recover. Emaciated and in poor health, the dog gradually started to gain weight under the care of the shelter staff.
Once she had recovered from her ordeal, she was adopted by a vet tech from the Humane Society, named Megan.
Fawna’s former owner has her day in court
As for Fawna’s former owner, she was tracked down and taken to court. Fortunately, Fawna had a microchip so it was easy for the authorities to find the woman responsible for Fawna’s cruelty. It seemed she had abandoned the dog after her boyfriend asked her to move to Texas with him.
In court, she pleaded guilty to what she had done and had to pay a monetary fine of $620. She also had to complete community service, undergo a mental health evaluation, and enter the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program. As a further penalty, she is prohibited from adopting a dog in Pennsylvania ever again.
Fawna has now started her new life in a new home. And while her story is heartbreaking, it is a testament to the people who save her, loved and cared for her and helped her get her life back on track. All dogs deserve to live a happy life, and now Fawna is getting an opportunity to live a happy life.
