Woman Builds House And It Changes Her Life
Many people want to live a life on their own terms. By moving to the Welsh countryside and building her own house, a woman named Emma made that happen. She bravely lives on her own in the woods and is happy and free.
This house cost Emma only £1000. This is because she lives without the modern-day comforts that most people are used to. Emma’s house does not have running water, heat, or electricity. She likes it better that way!
She recently showed off her house to Bryce Langston of Living Big in a Tiny House.
Living Big in a Tiny House is a YouTube show that explores tiny homes and alternative lifestyles. In this episode, Emma shows Bryce all the reasons she loves her home and her lifestyle.
Emma owns her land and never has to worry about mortgage, debt, or bills. She is freed from the pressure to work, and prefers to spend her time being in nature. Her simple life involves cooking on an open fire, gathering milk from goats and eggs from chickens, and collecting water from the river. Because of these factors, Emma says she has a close relationship with the earth.
Emma even lives here through the tough winters.
But she is tough and has enough know-how to handle any weather conditions. And she enjoys collecting firewood to keep herself warm!
Her house protects her from rain and snow. After living here for 20 years, she has learned a lot from trial-and-error, and now can build a house that keeps her comfortable. She uses compostable materials, such as straw-bales and a plaster made from horse manure and clay. These factors help make her four-meter wide house quite cozy.
The roof is one with nature.
Emma’s overhang grows plants on it. The greenery blends into the forest, which helps create the whimsical, fairy-like feeling of her house. Emma tells Bryce that she chose this because it connects her and her house to nature even more.
The inside is cozy and welcoming.
Emma designed the interior of her house. It represents her love of nature and freedom. With no electricity, she needs a lot of natural light, so Emma built giant windows and opted to not use curtains. This gives her natural sunlight and moonlight.
The inside of her house emphasizes equality and connection, by building the ceiling rafters so that each one rests on another one. In addition to the cool roof, the inside also has a warm fireplace.
Care to share a meal?
Bryce points out that every time Emma wants to cook or have a cup of tea, she must gather firewood. But Emma spends less time collecting wood than other people do working to pay bills. And, she likes using natural fire.
Emma prefers to spend most of her time low to the ground, even cooking and eating. She calls herself “floor-based” and she prepares food by placing a cutting board on the ground.
And, bathing in river water.
Emma collects all of her water from the river and in buckets during rainstorms. Emma has a pretty nice setup, with an outdoor heated bathtub and even a sauna! Also, she has a composting toilet that sits on a cliff where she can look into the forest.
Emma chose a simple life. Although this lifestyle may seem challenging, she finds happiness in living among nature. She hopes that her lifestyle and idyllic home can inspire other people to live more freely.
