Determined dog teaches himself to walk upright like a human after losing a leg
Some dogs just have a will to be all that they can be. Regardless of the circumstances, they remain happy and live their lives to the fullest, Dexter is one such dog, who was determined to live his best life, despite almost losing it after an accident.
Dexter is now proving that with enough determination someone can do amazing things, including walking on two legs like a human.
A happy family dog
When Dexter’s family first adopted him, they were excited to have the excitable dog in their life. A Brittany spaniel, he lived up to the reputation of his breed, escaping outside the confines of the fence at his home. The family and their neighbors immediately started looking for him.
Tragedy strikes
Tim Pasek, one of Dexter’s owners, was just a few seconds late in reaching him after spotting him at a local park. As Dexter ran out in front of a truck, all Tim could do was run up and render aid as Dexter laid pinned under a front wheel by two of his legs.
Driving 45 minutes to a vet clinic, Pasek and his wife, Kentee, the two worried if Dexter would even make it. The recovery took months, as Dexter tried to learn to live with only three legs, while the other front leg required pins at the elbow.
Relearning how to walk
Worst of all, he had to learn how to walk all over again. Then one morning Dexter did something unexpected.
“One morning I had Dexter in the front yard for his morning routine, and he was so happy, I went back in to get my coffee,” Kentee told The Dodo. “When I came back outside, he was up on the front porch. I was shocked, a bit upset because he … had just had another surgery.”
Then, Dexter took it up a notch.

Unsure of how Dexter had gotten onto the porch, Kentee decided to try something out. She recalled the moment she realized how determined Dexter was to get around:
“I knew he was not putting any weight on his front leg, so I had no clue how he climbed those stairs. I carried him off the stairs and back to the yard and took out my phone to record his actions because I needed proof for myself and everyone else in our household. He turned around and did it again. I caught him walking upright up the front stairs … I was shocked and scared he would hurt himself again.”
It seemed the cat was out of the bag; Dexter had taught himself how to walk on two legs like a human. And while his initial steps were a little shaky, it only made him more determined to perfect walking on two legs.
“I remember feeling both amazement and apprehension over this determined dog.”

Word spread quickly about the dog who could walk on two legs on social media, and Kentee and her husband even started an Instagram for Dexter where they post videos of his feat. Now, he can run around on two legs way faster than he can hobble around on three.
He’s also become something of a local celebrity.
Fortunately, all of Dexter’s fame hasn’t gone to his head and he is still the same loveable and happy dog he has always been. He also has a TikTok, where he has over 228,000 followers and 5.4 million likes on his videos.
A determination to succeed
Dexter shows just how much a determination to do something can really change your life, for the better. He is also a perfect example of the resilience of dogs and how even after suffering the biggest tragedies, they still keep a happy and positive attitude.
