Watch the moment an abandoned, 130-pound St. Bernard finally sees his forever home

Sometimes, a person can lay eyes on a picture of a dog and just know in their heart that it’s meant to be. That’s what happened for a big, lovable St. Bernard when his mama first saw his picture circulating on an animal adoption site. Once she saw it, she knew that Cosmo would be getting adopted and going home, no matter what it took to get the 130-pound-dog there.

The colossal mass of fur and love had been abandoned to the Nebraska-based shelter Hearts United for Animals. No reason was given for the St. Bernard’s surrender, but it was immediately clear that it was through no fault of his own. The over-sized pup couldn’t have been a more perfect companion, and the shelter knew they had to find him a home.

If there was one thing readily noticeable about Cosmo, it’s that the St. Bernard had no idea just how big he really is.

The big ol’ furbaby was always trying to squeeze himself in the smallest of spaces. Probably a habit carried over from puppyhood and trying to burrow to safety. This silly habit of his, though, wasn’t enough to ward off his human-to-be, Jane.

Jane and her husband Geoff had been browsing through dogs up for adoption when they scrolled to Cosmo’s photo. It was love at first sight! The couple already knew that the St. Bernard was coming home with them. There was just one small hurdle that they had to jump over first; actually getting to the shelter to retrieve him.

The only real issue the family had with bringing the enormous St. Bernard home was that he was in Nebraska.

Jane and her family live all the way in upstate New York, roughly 1,500 miles from where Cosmo was being kept. Knowing that not getting the dog was simply not an option, the couple made a plan.

“When I decided I was going to fly to Nebraska, rent a car, and drive home with a 130-pound dog, I was pretty sure that most of the world would think I was crazy,” Jane recalls in the video below.

While at first, this plan might seem a little bit crazy, after seeing Cosmo’s photo the thought of not bringing him home seemed even crazier.

“There was a picture of Cosmo (online) just looking up at the camera like ‘please take me home’, and he was looking right at us,” Jane remembers.

While it’s obvious that Cosmo didn’t receive the best care before coming to the shelter, it was equally clear that it didn’t affect his ability to love one iota. The enormous bear-dog is so loving and cuddly that he can win anyone with a heart over if they’re willing to spend some time with him.

When Jane met Cosmo for the first time at the shelter in Nebraska, it was love at first belly rub.

“I don’t know if Cosmo has any understanding of what’s happening, but I think he understands there’s a human here who wants to give him some love and he’s pretty happy about it,” Jane says.

Not one to show up to a party empty-handed, Jane brought the playful St. Bernard his very own stuffed animal. He took to it and his new mama right away, instantly giving her kisses and rolling over so he could judge her tummy rubbing skills. It would appear that Jane passed Cosmo’s test with flying colors.

When it came time to get him in the rental car, though, no one was too surprised by the fact that Cosmo wasn’t too keen on the idea.

It took no less than a harness, lead, and three grown people to lift the massive pup into the car. Though he was wary about the long journey ahead, Jane said that after a while Cosmo settled in for the ride and got used to the car.

Just look at the adorably snubbed look on his face. You can definitely tell that the big ol’ Bernard is full of personality. Though Cosmo stayed pretty chill when they finally arrived at their home in New York, there was no question he was excited to get out and take a look around.

Insofar as anyone knew, this house would be the first that the St. Bernard has ever lived in, and he’s loving it!

“It’s nice to see him on a big space, see him spread out and put his belly on a cool floor, and just know he’s finally staying in a space, a place where can feel happy and comfortable,” Jane explains.

Cosmo the St. Bernard now has the best life that any dog could ever ask for.

He not only adopted Jane and Geoff, but he also inherited two human siblings, a brother and a sister. He also has two doggy siblings and even a giant rabbit! Though the rabbit isn’t nearly as large as Cosmo, it hasn’t stopped the St. Bernard from taking an interest in him.

Cosmo gets to live out in the country and go for roams with mom through the woods and play in the lake. We really don’t think there is another place on earth more perfect for him, and no better family to be adopted by.
