German shepherd abandoned when family moves — ends up with cancer from overexposure to the sun
When families move, they usually take their pets with them. At the very least, they make arrangements to ensure their pets are taken care of if they can’t take them along. But this was not the case with a German shepherd in South Africa, named Roxy. Her owners decided they didn’t want her anymore and left her in their old home for the next tenants to take care of.
This abandonment by the ones she loved almost cost Roxy her life. Fortunately, someone was there for her in her time of need.
Roxy was abandoned by her family
After her family moved out, Roxy had no clue that they had simply left her in the backyard of their old home while they moved away. She most likely wondered where they had gone.
When the new tenants arrived, they found her in the yard where she had laid in the hot sun with no shelter. Her ears were badly burned from the exposure. After being examined by a vet, it was determined that she had skin cancer on the tips of her ears.
Sidewalk Specials stepped in to help Roxy
Animal rescue Sidewalk Specials stepped in to help Roxy. They took her to a vet to get the necessary surgery to remove the cancer from her ears. Luckily, Roxy was otherwise healthy. Once she had recovered from her surgery, she was placed in a foster home to await adoption.
Roxy waits to get adopted
While at the foster home, Roxy got along with all of the other dogs. She spent her time at the foster home playing with her fur siblings, and her days were filled with joy once again. But, sadly, it wasn’t meant to last.
Over time, all the other dogs got adopted. Everyone except Roxy. Who could blame her for thinking that no one wanted her? After all, she was a senior dog, and senior dogs were not as desirable as younger canines.
Roxy finally gets adopted
Then one day Roxy was adopted by a loving family. They accepted her regardless of her age. The best part was that Roxy had a new sibling, the family’s other dog, to play with. She now spends her days living with a loving family who is taking great care of her.
This story just goes to show that all dogs deserve a second chance at life, including senior dogs.
