Abandoned Ollie was found in an old chair in the trash trying to keep warm

Many families love their pets, but this is not always the case. Tales exist of a family leaving their animals behind when they move. Sometimes these abandoned pets end up in the local animal shelter, but not always. Sometimes they end up just another homeless pet on the street trying to survive.

That could have been the case with Ollie, but luckily Terri Looby, a volunteer with Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG), spotted him while out on a call.

Looby spotted the abandoned dog as she responded to another call. The poor pooch was curled up on an old chair outside his former home. His family had moved and thrown Ollie out with the trash. He had climbed into the chair in an attempt to keep warm. Chances were it was his favorite spot in his old home.

“He was all curled up as tight as he could get. I got out of the car, he lifted his head, I started going over towards him and I saw the tail wagging. I used baby talk, I said ‘come on buddy, you’re OK.’ He came towards me and just started licking my face.” Looby said in a News13 interview.

A blessing in disguise

Neighbors of the family said that they had been evicted. The family had returned to the home to pick up a younger dog but had left once again without Ollie. Looby immediately took him to the vet to get a check-up. As it turned out Ollie was suffering from a badly broken femur and was malnourished. Rescuers figured he had been suffering from neglect for a while and his abandonment was a blessing in disguise.

Finding Ollie a home

After receiving treatment, the animal rescue’s next step was to find a foster home for Ollie. Offers poured in as soon as they posted his story on social media, and soon he was in a foster home with two other dogs, a pair of pugs. His foster mom talked about how Ollie had no idea how big he was. He would try and fit into his foster sibling’s smaller beds, curling himself as tightly as he could to try and fit.

DAWG also created a page to try and raise money to help pay for his medical expenses. The surgery to fix his femur ended up being pretty expensive. The organization set a goal of $2,500 to pay his expenses. The amount that they received was far more than the amount they needed.

Ollie’s story seemed to strike a nerve with many people and soon enough he had been adopted into his forever home. The poor dog might have been unwanted by his former family, but his new family would never even consider abandoning the sweet dog.
