Abandoned dog bonds to kitten she was found nursing when rescued from ravine

It is not uncommon to see animals of different species get along with each other and making inter-species friendships. But how often do you see a dog nursing a kitten?

A tiny kitten nursing on a female dog is probably a rare sight.

Even more so if the dog has not even had babies recently. Just because something is rare, though, doesn’t mean it’s impossible. In fact, this is what happened in South Carolina and surprised everyone who witnessed it.

It was just a regular day at work for Officer Michelle Smith from Anderson Animal Control, until she got a call about a dog barking in a neighborhood. This was nothing uncommon for Smith. Such calls are pretty common and they usually end up being the neighbor’s dog or something similar.

When she arrived at the location where the barking was coming from, she realized that this was not going to be just another ordinary case.

She saw a dog in a deep ravine near a creek, but she wasn’t alone. She had a tiny kitten with her.

The Officer looked at the duo and saw that they were not wearing collars, so they were probably strays or had been abandoned. It took her a moment to decide what she could do to help them.

“I think it would’ve been OK for the dog to walk down the hill,” Smith said. “I got down there, so it should be pretty easy for the dog, but I’m thinking it just couldn’t get back up with the kitten, and I don’t think it was willing to leave the kitten.”

And then it hit her: the dog hadn’t gotten down there by accident. She had gone down the hill in order to save the vulnerable kitten. Smith brought the two animals back to the shelter where they could be taken care of.

When they got there, the staff tried to separate them so that they could bathe and vet them.

That’s when they realized they wouldn’t let go of each other. The dog insisted on bathing and nursing the kitten herself.

“We believe her body’s going through a pseudo pregnancy, where she is producing milk,” explained Jessica Cwynar, director at Anderson Co. Paws. “However, it is not sufficient enough to provide for the kitten.”

Given the situation, the shelter staff had to also bottle feed the kitten, although she looked very happy nursing on her adoptive dog mama.

After some time, when it was clear that nobody was going to claim the two animals and when they were in good health, it was time for them to be adopted.

The shelter made sure to find them a home together, so that they wouldn’t be separated given the strong bond they had built.

Goldie and Kate (named after mother-and-daughter Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson), are now super happy in their new forever home. Thanks to the kind officer and the wonderful help of the shelter staff, what could have been a horrific story turned out to have a very happy ending.
