Max was abandoned by his owner on a park bench on November 22nd, 2020. He was left tied to the bench so that he couldn’t run away and the note was weighted with a rock so that it couldn’t float away.

Without food or water, all Max could do is watch the world pass him by. Then, someone read the note and his life changed forever.

There was no way for Max to realize what was happening with him. He only knew that he couldn’t move from the position he was in.

Anytime someone would get close to him, he would start to growl.

It was plain to see that the poor dog was suffering.

It’s easy to blame Max’s former owners but, unfortunately, it is common for pets to be abandoned when their owners fall into poverty.

Some people bring their pets to a shelter or find new homes for them. Even this must be such a heartbreaking experience for the pet.

Max wasn’t taken to a shelter, however, he was left on a bench with a note.

It wasn’t long after Max had been left on the bench that someone noticed. They called on two noted animal rescuers, Marcela Goldberg and Azul Galindo.

Other people in the neighborhood did what they could for the dog.

“There were already several neighbors gathered who had brought him water and food because they left him tied to the bench with nothing,” Goldberg told The Dodo. “But they could not get close because the puppy was terrified, growling and snipping.”

Since the onset of the global pandemic, many dogs had been abandoned by their owners because they could no longer afford to feed them. Goldberg and Galindo were not surprised to have been called to the scene of another abandoned animal.

People Unable To Care For Their Pets During Pandemic

The pandemic has been difficult for many. Being out of work with no money is frightening. Many people have had to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets. Sometimes, when pets are abandoned, it’s out of hope that someone else can provide for them.

Next to Max was a note that explained the dog’s former owner’s position. They loved Max and were heartbroken by having to leave him to strangers. The note also shared why Max was not that friendly to unfamiliar people.

The note read as follows:

“Hi, please adopt me: Max. Please, I ask that you adopt this cute dog and you take good care of him. It hurts a lot to leave my dog here but I made the decision of leaving him because my family used to mistreat him and it would always hurt me to see him in that condition. If you’re reading this and your heart wavers, please adopt him and take good care of him. If not, please leave this note in its place. That way others can read it and adopt him. Thank you.”

Before the rescuers could find a new home for Max, however, they needed to give him a full check-up. They also needed to make sure that Max had a demeanor that would make him suitable for adoption.

Max was very agitated at first. Even being offered food did little to calm his nerves.

The rescuers contacted someone who had experience working with dogs exhibiting such traits, however.

“We contacted a trainer with experience in aggressive dogs who watched the situation by video call and gave me instructions until we managed to pass the loop [over his head] and cut the other chain,” Goldberg said.

After speaking with the expert, the rescuers cut Max’s chain. After this, he began to calm down quite a bit.

The rescue organization Mascotas Coyocan posted images of Max, now named “Boston” on their Facebook page.

“With patience, sausage and love, the beast became a beautiful puppy recharging while laying on my hand and body and sitting next to me.
He will no longer be called Max, as his name appears in the note, because he awaits a new life without any trace of his past life of abuse and neglect. Now it will be Boston, which is the name we chose for the pit they abandoned in an apartment and eventually returned to with its owner.
From this moment on, there will only be love in Boston’s life.”

The rescuers put out a plea for people to adopt Boston.

They also are looking for someone who can provide a temporary home while a forever version is sought.

Boston seems to enjoy helping out with the chores!

A suitable foster home hasn’t been found as of yet for the good boy. He’s had some behavioral issues in the past, so it will take a truly special caregiver.

Boston also has met some friends while staying temporarily with one of his rescuers.

Since Boston’s story has been spread throughout the world, there are now plenty of suiters for the pup.
