Boater finds 7 abandoned and starving puppies on a deserted island
What are the chances of stumbling upon a liter of pups on an island with no signs of people living there? And yet that’s what happened to a local named Junior Cook.
Cook is a boater and he was out cruising by the tiny Canadian isle, near Cross Keys, Manitoba. He then heard strange noises coming from an uninhabited land.
He thought it was odd and couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Cook returned the next day, curious and wanting to investigate the cries he heard. What he found shocked him. The uninhabited island had seven puppies running and crying around by themselves.
Cook was concerned so he contacted Norway House Animal Rescue, who then responded immediately to his call. They’re used to receiving these kinds of calls.
“This is not an isolated case and happens daily in Manitoba and all over the world,” they posted regarding the rescue.
Norway House Animal Rescue works to help transport abandoned animals to different shelters with the hopes of getting them adopted.
Deb Vandekerkhove is the director of the rescue, and he told CBC, “He and his friend were out and it was getting dark already, and they heard some noises on the island.”
“They took their binoculars and they couldn’t see anything but some dark shadows, and they heard a bunch of crying. They thought originally it was wolves.” he added.
Food was delivered to the puppies for the first few days until they could arrange a transport for them.
The rescue supplied all the food the abandoned pups needed. Cook took it upon himself to bring the food to the pups. Those poor hungry pups finished a large bag of food in just one day.
They were super hungry!
And whenever Cook would arrive, the pups would come running to meet him. It was obvious to everyone they were starving.
As a result, the pups slowly began to warm up to people. “They’re getting better with people now, which is a good thing because they were terrified of them when they first came.”
The puppies then took a 330-mile trip to Winnipeg. They were put up for adoption.
“They will be the Gilligan’s Island crew — four boys, three girls,” Vandekerhove states.
They named the pups after the characters on the popular 1960’s TV show. It took a few days to find which pup was to be named with but they figured it out.
Skipper, Gilligan, Mary-Anne, The Professor, Ginger, Lovey, and Mr. Howell are all looking for their loving homes.
“They are receiving medical treatment for lice, tapeworm and malnourishment at this time and will be place up for adoption when healthy,” posted Winnipeg Pet Rescue.
It’s not clear who the person was that left these poor pups to die on the island. The pups were cared for and brought back to health. Let’s hope the heartless person responsible was eventually caught.
